The scene was filmed at Jackson Lake Island - a private island in Elmore County, Alabama. After filming ended, the set was first abandoned, then partially renovated for use as a tourist attraction. A few years after filming, some buildings began to deteriorate. When owners tried to remove debris, sparks caused a fire that spread across the road and ignited other buildings. The commercial district of the "town" was destroyed by fire. Visitors to the island can also, for a small fee, access the island with a boat and fishing gear to fish in the freshwater lake.

The scene was filmed at Pine Flat Presbyterian Church was founded as a congregation in 1829, and the current one-room church building was built in 1871. The church is located on the site of a former log school built shortly after the arrival of white settlers, around 1800. The schoolhouse was moved, and a log church was built on this site in 1829, according to the documentation of the Register of Monuments and Heritage.
