The scene was filmed at Crane Beach, a 1,234-acre (4.99 km2) conservation and recreation area located in Ipswich, Massachusetts, just north of Cape Ann. It consists of a four-mile (6 km) stretch of sandy beach, dunes, and maritime pine forest. Five and a half miles of hiking trails through the dunes and forest are accessible from the shoreline. Crane Beach is open year-round and free for Ipswich residents with an annual parking sticker. For non-residents, beach access is paid. Crane Beach was established in 1945 as a gift from Richard T. Crane Jr. Every year on June 16 (weather permitting), a celebration called Crane Beach Day is held on the beach.
