Between 1350 and 1550, the French burned the town several times. In the 16th century, Seaford's inhabitants were known as "cormorants" or "shakers" due to their penchant for looting ships wrecked in the bay. Seaford's fortunes revived in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway connecting the town to Lewes and London. It became a small seaside resort town. Martello Tower is the 74th of 103 small defensive forts built in the 19th century throughout the British Empire during the French Revolutionary Wars. It now houses the Seaford Museum.
