It covers 843 acres (341 ha) between the Upper West Side and Upper East Side, bounded by Fifth Avenue to the east, Central Park West (Eighth Avenue) to the west, Central Park South (59th Street) to the south, and Central Park North (110th Street) to the north. Central Park is the most visited city park in the United States, with 40 million visitors in 2013, and one of the most filmed locations in the world. Elkan Naumburg (1835–1924) was a New York merchant, banker, philanthropist, and musicologist, best remembered for his patronage of the arts in Manhattan. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, he used his wealth to foster public interest in symphonic and "semi-classical" music, helping to form and create the Oratorio Society of New York and funding the construction of the Naumburg Bandshell, which bears his name, at the Central Park concert venue.
