In Reality

The scene was filmed at Kalk Bay - a fishing village on the coast of False Bay, South Africa, currently a suburb of greater Cape Town. The literal translation from Dutch/Afrikaans of the name "Kalkbaai" is "Lime Bay". This comes from the huge deposits of mussel shells that the first settlers burned to obtain lime for construction. The first stone for the harbor was laid in 1913. Kalk Bay also has a tiny but world-famous surf spot called "Kalk Bay Reef". During whale watching season, southern right whales come here, often seen playing or resting very close to surfers or piers.
