Huge sandstone and granite mountains rise vertically from wide sandy valleys, reaching heights of 1700 meters and more. Narrow canyons and crevices cut deep into the mountains, many hiding ancient rock carvings etched by desert peoples over millennia. Among the Rum mountains, Bedouin tribes still live, and their large goat-hair tents are a special feature of the landscape.
