In Reality

The scene was filmed Baler is located 231 kilometers (144 miles) northeast of Manila. It is the capital of Aurora province, Philippines. In 1609, seven Franciscan missionaries led by Friar Blas Palomino founded the settlement of Baler. After filming the beach scenes for "Apocalypse Now," the film crew left surfboards for the locals. This inspired the locals. Today, Baler is one of the oldest surf communities in the country. The place got its nickname from a quote in the film: "Charlie don't surf."
