The scene was filmed at Aït Ben Haddou, a fortified village (ksar) located along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in Morocco. Most of the inhabitants, attracted by the tourist business, live in more modern houses in the village on the other side of the river, although four families still live in the ancient village. Aït Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
