The scene was filmed at Hellfire Pass was cleared in six weeks, mainly by Allied prisoners of war who worked 18-hour days using only hand tools. Hundreds died there; 69 were beaten to death. The actual scene was filmed at a cutting called Hintok, on Lomax's 93rd birthday.

The scene was filmed at The monument is dedicated to Dugald Stewart (1753-1828), a writer and philosopher who was born and educated in Edinburgh. The Royal Society of Edinburgh commissioned the monument and chose the site in 1830. It was built in 1831 to a design by William Henry Playfair, who also designed the nearby National Monument.
