Originally it was the bed of an ancient river, possibly a branch of the Brenta, which flowed between the marshy islands on which Venice was later built.

The scene was filmed at Palazzo degli Uffizi, a palazzo or city palace originally serving as the offices of the Florentine magistracy of the De Medici family, which houses one of the oldest and most important art museums in the world, the Uffizi Gallery. The palace is located next to Palazzo Vecchio, also owned by the De Medici for centuries, on Piazza della Signoria.
