A young Stanley Kubrick was one of the regular chess players. The park is known for its arch honoring George Washington. The arch, designed by New York architect Stanford White and erected in 1892, was modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. But the square is also famous for its fountain. The first fountain near the arch was built in 1852 and replaced in 1872.
