LEAVING FOR TOUR

Tomorrow, my son and I are getting on a train and heading to the city of Vladimir, where we have been invited to perform at a concert.

Adrian is 4 years old and has never studied music or vocals (except for kindergarten classes), so this is his first experience performing on a big stage.

We spent three weeks preparing for this event (fortunately, his mother is a vocal teacher and knows how to best organize the process). I’m sharing with you what I considered most important and included in the preparation 👇🏻

1. SOUND RECORDING 🎧

If you ask me the fastest way to learn a song, it’s sound recording.

The mechanism is simple: our musical memory (the vocal skill responsible for correctly remembering melody, rhythm, lyrics, singing position, etc.) is based on musical-auditory images. That is, however the song “loads” into your head, that’s how you’ll sing it. And the most effective way to load it is by listening to it in the timbre of your own voice.

So Adrian and I recorded the song in the studio and used only that track for practice afterward.

2. REGULARITY 📎

I often repeat that progress in vocals is determined not by the duration of lessons but by their regularity: it’s better to practice 15 minutes 6 times a week than once for 3 hours.

So I didn’t overload the child with long rehearsals, but three times a week on the way to kindergarten we would listen to the studio recording and sing along.

3. DRESS REHEARSAL 🎙️

It’s not always possible to rehearse in the place where you plan to perform (as in our case). However, it’s very important to recreate conditions as similar as possible to what awaits you on stage.

So Adrian and I held two rehearsals in a music classroom with two microphones and large speakers, and we also planned our entrance and exit from the stage.

💙And finally, I’ll share with you the main rule of the stage, which I also told my son:
no matter what happens — just keep singing as best you can and act like everything is going according to plan.
