In 1976, Sylvester Stallone was a penniless actor. Only $106 in his pocket, a pregnant wife, and a script about a loser boxer that he wrote in 3 days. Studios offered $360,000 (a huge sum back then), but with the condition that he does not play the lead role.
Stallone refused. He took a risk and sold the script for less, on the condition that he would play Rocky himself. The film became a hit, bringing billions, Oscars, and fame.
🧩 The actor overlooked a small detail.
In the euphoria of success, due to inexperience, he signed a standard contract where he didn't pay attention to the clause about Intellectual Property. He thought he would always be paid a fair share.
But legally, he sold all rights to the characters and universe to producer Irwin Winkler.
47 years later, the "Rocky" and "Creed" franchises have generated billions of dollars. Stallone received fees as an actor + screenwriter, but not as the owner of his creation.
