'Tyler Rake: Extraction' is a new brutal Netflix blockbuster from the Russo brothers that may seem stupid and violent, but you definitely won't call it boring.

Netflix has had another high-profile premiere - the debut of the blockbuster 'Tyler Rake: Extraction' (also known as 'Extraction') starring Marvel Cinematic Universe star Chris Hemsworth. The project's writers and producers include the Russo brothers, who also have direct ties to the MCU. Did stuntman and first-time director Sam Hargrave manage to make a worthy action movie, and who should avoid this film? Read our review.

Primitive Plot

At the center of the story is a former military man, now a special ops fighter, Tyler Rake (Hemsworth), who is tasked with kidnapping the son of a drug dealer from his rival, who has abducted the teenager. 

That's exactly how it happens: one drug lord kidnaps the offspring of another dealer from a neighboring country for ransom and to undermine his enemy's authority, and the brave daredevil played by Chris Hemsworth agrees to rescue the boy for money, of course.

From the very start of the extraction operation, everything goes wrong, and Tyler is left almost alone against an entire city where both the special services and local gangsters, young and old, answer to drug lord Asif. The heroes' chances of getting out of this mess are slim, but Rake has gotten out of worse situations (probably).

The plot in this film holds absolutely no value. It is primitive, linear, and predictable from start to finish. But in adrenaline-pumped movies, that's far from the most important thing.

What's more disappointing is that the creators of 'Tyler Rake: Extraction' didn't bother to give their characters any distinguishing traits, to make them charismatic and memorable. Hemsworth has no chance of creating a new Rambo or Jason Bourne for the simple reason that his character is bland. They tried to write a personal drama for him, but it's neither convincing nor remotely interesting. He's made into a simple killing machine that occasionally sheds a tear. 

The same can be said for any other character in the film. The antagonist is pure evil because it has to be that way, Rake's teammates are clueless because it's easier to show his coolness, and the boy, while adding some variety with his dialogue, is more of a function than an interesting character. Even Hopper, sorry, David Harbour, who drops by the film, gets a maximally clichéd role as the protagonist's former friend with secrets.

Hurricane Action

If anyone seriously considered 'Extraction' as a gripping and unpredictable story, those viewers will certainly be disappointed by what they see.

But if you were expecting bone-crushing, high-octane action, the filmmakers have plenty to offer. There are inventive shootouts, adrenaline-fueled chases, severed limbs, hand-to-hand fights, explosions, and much more. Special mention goes to the cinematography, which in some moments is not just surprising but even stunning.

There's only one catch in this regard - the film turned out to be quite brutal. Children are killed, fingers are cut off, and blood literally flows like a river on screen. Overly impressionable viewers might be slightly shocked by such a spectacle. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Is 'Tyler Rake: Extraction' Worth Watching?

In the end, it can be said that Sam Hargrave, who made a name for himself as a stunt coordinator, managed to make a solid, spectacular, and brutal action movie. Yes, with the genre's stupidities and conventions. Yes, with characters you'll forget immediately after watching. But it won't be easy to tear yourself away from the screen.
