«Dandadan» has become a true phenomenon in the modern cultural landscape. It's especially interesting to see how people who previously preferred live-action films and series are gradually getting into anime culture through this title.
The same thing happened to the author of this article. A person quite distant from anime truly felt what was happening on screen and eagerly awaited the release of the second season. And then, as if on cue, «Dandadan: Evil Eye» arrived. Let's try to break it down together, avoiding spoilers?
Synopsis
The energetic duo of the medium girl Momo and the cursed boy Okarun (Konspirun) once again find themselves drawn into a confrontation with unknown forces. They must figure out who is behind the troubles that have befallen the family of their friend Jiji in the hot spring district. Ghosts? Aliens? Will the heroes manage to get out of all the troubles, or will they only make things worse?
The Animated Attraction 'Dandadan: Evil Eye'
One of the distinctive features was the very high-quality and inventive animation. And, judging by the first three episodes, the new season will not be inferior to the first. It even aims to raise the bar.

This is not surprising at all. The director of Science SARU studio, Fuga Yamashiro, received reinforcement in the form of the Spaniard Abel Góngora, who worked on creating the opening in the previous season. The opening was simply gorgeous, by the way, one of the keys to the success of the first season in my eyes.
Believe me, the visuals in 'Dandadan: Evil Eye' are simply incredible. How much effort is required to create original animation, especially in battle or action scenes! Your humble servant often complains about the overabundance of 3D animation in animation (take, for example) and how much high-quality 2D is lacking nowadays. So here we have a real feast for the eyes. Starting from the incredible detail of movements and ending with very successful color palette solutions.

For those who love the manga by Yukinobu Tatsu or even just got acquainted with it after the first season, what's happening will not be a secret. It's still just as crazy, fun, and sometimes very deep and dramatic.
But the main problem with this compilation of episodes is that it wasn't enough to complete the arc. We were waiting for answers on how the cliffhanger situation would be resolved, and we, alas, got it in a very truncated form. Yes, a lot happens on screen. Yes, we are introduced to bright and interesting secondary characters who will still have time to develop. But viewers will not see a complete story.
After the screening ended, there were several visitors in the cinema (and yes, I admit, I was among them) who started cursing at the screen. Like, how are we supposed to wait for the continuation now? It's as if they first waved the promised carrot in front of our noses, which they then allowed us to take one bite of – but never let us eat it. On the one hand, it's cool that the creators have the drive, but on the other hand, they also deprived us a bit of the feeling of satisfaction. That's not right.
Character Development
One of the most pleasant aspects of 'Dandadan: Evil Eye' is the development of the characters and their relationships.
And I'm not just talking about the very cute interaction between Momo and Okarun. There's also the very warm and heartfelt friendship between Okarun and Jiji, and the gradual interesting personal growth of Turbo Granny in the body of a maneki-neko doll. And in general, her figure is an inexhaustible source of memes and humor, especially when it comes to expressive facial expressions. I never thought I'd write that about a cat doll.
We miss Aira and Seiko a bit, who we already loved from the first season – but then again, how much material can you cram into the first three episodes? Especially if we still have a full season to watch, which will probably not be limited to that?
Summing Up
'Dandadan: Evil Eye' may anger fans with its understatement – but anger in the right way, in a good way. The way you need to anger when you plan to keep viewers and leave a desire for something more in their hearts.
We definitely recommend watching it – but carefully. If you thought the first season had an overabundance of risqué jokes and non-childish hints, then the bar has definitely been raised here. No, there won't be any outright obscenity, but some viewers may be alarmed. Just keep that in mind when you buy your tickets.
