'From Dusk Till Dawn' (1996)
Fugitive criminals Seth and Richard Gecko (George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino) take a pastor's family hostage and hide in Mexico. A bloody trail follows them all the way from the courthouse from which they managed to escape. Along the way, they stop at a seedy bar, like 'Road House', which turns out to be a vampire lair. The brothers and their hostages will have to fight for survival until dawn. And not everyone will be lucky.
This film should undoubtedly be first on the list. Because Coogler himself was inspired by Robert Rodriguez's film when writing 'Sinners'. Therefore, many elements of Rodriguez's dashing western-horror are easily recognizable in the California director's film, and he unashamedly tips his hat to it.
'From Dusk Till Dawn' is already an absolute classic. An unexpected mix of crime thriller and horror. The first half resembles a classic road movie, but then the plot abruptly shifts into bloody vampire action. Typical Tarantino characters, unexpected humor, and a real bloodbath in the film's finale made it truly cult.
'Green Book' (2018)
1960s, USA. A rough Italian-American bouncer Tony Vallelonga, nicknamed Lip (Viggo Mortensen), is hired as a driver for a refined African-American virtuoso pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali). Their tour through the southern states, where racial segregation reigns, turns into a dangerous journey. In which, however, they will manage to become close friends.
Another film whose atmosphere resembles 'Sinners'. Peter Farrelly's drama is based not only on a touching story of friendship, overcoming prejudice, and the mutual influence of two opposites. 'Green Book', like Coogler's film, is also incredibly musical. The polyphony of various genres (from classical to soul and blues) accompanies the characters throughout the film and easily coexists with comedy and social sharpness, without resorting to excessive moralizing. Excellent acting and a warm atmosphere made 'Green Book' a three-time Oscar winner, including Best Picture.
'Midnight Mass' (2021)
The main character, Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford), returns to his native isolated island town after a prison sentence. At the same time, a charismatic priest, Father Paul (Hamish Linklater), appears in the community, whose sermons are accompanied by inexplicable 'miracles'. Gradually, the residents begin to change, and increasingly strange and frightening events occur in the town.
'Midnight Mass' is a slow, atmospheric, and deeply philosophical horror drama from Mike Flanagan. The project's hallmark is dialogues and a growing sense of anxiety instead of typical jump scares. The climactic scene where vampires and humans clash in a final confrontation in a confined space evokes associations with the similar battle of Smoke and Ash from 'Sinners'. The same claustrophobia, the same doomed poetics of the last stand.
'Django Unchained' (2012)
A new classic from Quentin Tarantino, which Ryan Coogler could also easily have been inspired by. Slave Django (Jamie Foxx) gains freedom thanks to German bounty hunter Dr. Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Together they set out to find Django's wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), who was sold to the cruel plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).
A stylish, provocative, and witty western combining brutal violence, black humor, and immersion into the era of slavery in the USA. A special piquancy to this carnival of cruelty is added by Calvin Candie, played by DiCaprio. A slave owner with the manners of a vampire dandy. Just mentally add fangs to him — and the image is complete. The same manners (but with real fangs) were possessed by the main antagonist of 'Sinners', the Irish vampire Remmick, brilliantly played by Jack O'Connell.
'Mississippi Burning' (1988)
Director Alan Parker's drama is based on real events in 1964 in Mississippi, where three civil rights activists were brutally murdered. Two FBI agents — an experienced agent (Gene Hackman) and a young idealist (Willem Dafoe) — investigate the disappearance of the activists, facing a conspiracy of silence, racism, and corruption in local authorities.
A tough and emotionally charged drama that exposes the depths of racial hatred and bureaucratic indifference. The film impresses with powerful acting (especially Hackman, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), an atmosphere of oppression and hopelessness, and unexpectedly poetic visual solutions.
'Abigail' (2024)
A group of kidnappers takes on what seems like a simple task — to kidnap and erase the memory of a girl named Abigail to get a ransom from her wealthy father. However, they soon realize that their victim is not an ordinary child, but a bloodthirsty vampire. Trapped in a locked mansion, the criminals become her prey one by one.
— a stylish but somewhat boring horror with unjustifiably violent scenes. The film balances between a tense thriller and dark comedy, but more often looks like a horror festival where all vampire movies are cosplayed at once. And if it weren't for the final showdown in the locked mansion, the film would hardly be able to surprise with anything. The most memorable character turned out to be young Abigail ( Alisha Weir ). She spins a bloody fouetté to Tchaikovsky's music and pursues the next victim with cybernetic relentlessness.
On paper, 'Abigail' is a lively and bloody, but in reality a boring and inexpressive horror comedy, whose heroine could easily become a meme on social media.
