In recent years, the genre has been penetrating deeper into global pop culture, expanding its fan base. Last year, for example, for the second time in history, the Oscar for Best Animated Feature was awarded to an anime film, and Hollywood is increasingly taking on live-action adaptations of series like or 'Cowboy Bebop.' However, there are still people who believe that watching anime as an adult is some kind of faux pas. So we've put together a subjective selection of ten feature-length titles that we love and think are worth watching regardless of your attitude towards the genre. Perhaps one of these films will be the first step towards a huge adventure.

«Grave of the Fireflies» is a film you won't want to rewatch for pleasure. Once you see it, it's hard to forget. It's, in a way, the anime version of «Come and See» by Elem Klimov, which clearly shows that war is not a rainbow phenomenon where heroes are made and great feats are accomplished, but a tragedy of international scale. Especially for the Japanese, World War II is associated with shame, defeat, and senseless sacrifices. There's no pride or national unity here. And a boy eager to be a hero for his little sister finds himself unable to protect her. It's a sad and terrifying film, but definitely worth watching.
«Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door» (2001)
Studio Sunrise, which created the cult series, together with Studio Bones presented a feature-length continuation under the direction of Shinichiro Watanabe. The film, set between episodes 22 and 23 of the original series, follows the Bebop crew's investigation of a series of terrorist attacks on Mars. The main antagonist is former soldier Vincent Volaju, who plans to release a deadly virus during a grand parade. The visual style combines the series' signature jazz aesthetic with cinematic action scene staging, and the soundtrack by Yoko Kanno received a separate album.
The film's popularity is based on a perfect balance between nostalgia for the series and its standalone value. A key plus is the in-depth development of the antagonist: Vincent's tragic story echoes Spike's past, creating a mirror conflict. The animation surpasses the TV original—especially impressive are the shootout scenes amidst falling petals. However, newcomers may find it difficult to appreciate the nuances: the film assumes knowledge of the characters' personalities, and some dialogues sound like references to events in the series.
This film is worth watching as an example of a rare successful expansion of an anime universe. It retains the philosophical depth of the original («You carry your past like a cross») but offers a more grandiose visual realization. Particularly impressive is the final duel against the backdrop of festive fireworks—possibly the best action scene in the entire franchise. «Knockin' on Heaven's Door» proves that anime sequels can not just exploit popularity but creatively develop the source material.

«The Cat Returns» (2002)
An original film by Studio Ghibli directed by Hiroyuki Morita, a student of Hayao Miyazaki. The story begins as a typical school comedy: insecure Haru saves a strange cat from a truck, unaware that it is the prince of the Cat Kingdom. However, the plot soon turns into a surreal adventure with elements of absurdist humor and subtle social satire. The visual style combines classic Ghibli detail with unusually grotesque animation of the cat characters.
The film stands out among other studio works for its lightness and comedic focus. A plus is the original humor and unconventional take on the theme of growing up—instead of deep drama, the viewer gets an ironic fairy tale with unexpected twists. However, fans of «serious» Ghibli may find it lacking in depth and epicness. Also, some plot points seem too absurd even for this format.
Despite its apparent simplicity, «The Cat Returns» is a clever and unusual anime worth watching to unwind after heavy dramas. It's proof that Ghibli can create not only masterpieces but also quality «light» works that still retain the studio's signature style and charm.
«Howl's Moving Castle» (2004)
One of the most famous works of the genius . An evil witch turns a young girl into an old woman, forcing her to leave home and head to the Waste. There, the heroine stumbles upon a strange giant moving structure, becomes a cleaner, and finds friends. The film is based on the eponymous book by British writer Diana Wynne Jones , but the Japanese animator added his own vision and slightly shifted the focus from the characters themselves to an anti-war statement.

In many works, the animator regularly reflects his stance, from «Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind» to «The Boy and the Heron». «Howl's Moving Castle» is one of the brightest examples where the author's pressing theme comes to the forefront and directly affects the characters. Released right after the Oscar-winning «Spirited Away», the film won viewers' hearts and instantly entered the pantheon of the wizard's best works. Miyazaki's filmography is perhaps the most suitable way to start getting acquainted with Japanese animation. As they say, pick any work—you won't go wrong. But «Howl's Moving Castle» is a must-watch.
«Wolf Children» (2012)
One fateful day, college student Hana crosses paths with a young man at her university. Upon meeting, the heroine learns that the guy is actually the last descendant of a werewolf race and has been hiding his abilities for many years. However, Hana is not afraid of him at all: over time, they start their own family. Tragically, soon after the birth of their second child, Hana's beloved dies in an accident.
An elegantly animated modern fairy tale by Mamoru Hosoda, «Wolf Children» contains many powerful emotional blows, exploring the difficulties and advantages of parenthood. A poetic and romantic story that balances its saccharine elements with dark notes and delightful hints of strangeness.
Together with the main character, the viewer experiences all the key moments that happen to the family over ten years. «Wolf Children» is a one-of-a-kind film that will surely stay in everyone's heart. The anime is worth watching not only for its beautiful animation and deep plot but also for its surprisingly honest portrayal of parental sacrifice. Every frame is filled with warmth and nostalgia, and the characters of the children—Ame, drawn to the wild, and Yuki, striving for a normal life—evoke strong emotional attachment. This is a film about how important it is to accept yourself, even if you don't fit the mold.
«Your Name.» (2016)
An anime by Makoto Shinkai about a girl from the countryside and that «cute guy from Tokyo» who inexplicably swap bodies in their dreams and live each other's lives. An incredibly bright and touching work that doesn't get stuck in the clichés of «body swap» films. The comedic element in such an unusual situation naturally remains, but over time the film smoothly transitions into a melancholic drama about first love.
Shinkai masterfully contrasts opposites: boy and girl, antiquity and modernity, province and metropolis, obedience and rebellion—all against the backdrop of deep emotions and unusual relationships between the main characters. «Your Name.» is one of the most beautiful and best films in the filmography of the genius animator. Despite the director himself mentioning a lack of time and money to perfect the work, it's safe to say the film is nearly flawless. Such anime is worth its weight in gold.
«A Silent Voice» (2016)
A magnificent anime by Naoko Yamada and a true gem in the collection of Kyoto Animation. The story of the relationship between Shoya Ishida and Shoko Nishimiya, who knew each other from elementary school. Being too young and naive, the bully boy turned the life of a deaf girl into hell, and later became an outcast himself, realizing the consequences of his actions only years later. Consumed by guilt and rejected by peers, the guy almost takes his own life, but first decides to make amends to the kind girl who once suffered because of him.
«A Silent Voice» raises a host of important themes, with the conversation about disability and bullying at the center. Children, as we know, are the cruelest creatures on the planet. They are straightforward and intolerant of differences, so they often don't think about how much they can hurt someone. But everyone grows up eventually. And with age often comes the realization of mistakes made in youth. Indeed, Yamada's work brilliantly demonstrates the protagonist's journey from awareness and despair to redemption and forgiveness. This beautiful and emotional film rightfully holds high positions in various lists of the best feature-length anime.
«Violet Evergarden: The Movie» (2020)
The adaptation of the eponymous light novel by Kyoto Animation exists both as a series released in 2018 and as feature-length films. Moreover, the 2020 film serves as the emotional conclusion to the story. The action takes place in an original steampunk world where Violet, devoid of emotions, a former child soldier, becomes an «Auto Memory Doll»—a professional scribe.
Special attention deserves KyoAni's signature style: incredibly detailed backgrounds, play of light and shadow, smooth animation that turns every frame into a work of art. The project's popularity is explained by its unique ability to combine visual beauty with poignant emotional impact. Each episode (and the film in particular) is a masterfully told drama where human destinies are revealed through letters. However, some viewers may find it lacking in dynamics—the narrative is measured, with an emphasis on dialogue and inner experiences. It's also worth noting that the film requires prior viewing of the series for full context.
The film draws a perfect line under Violet's story, showcasing the impressive evolution of the heroine. It's a must-see for those who value not only entertainment in anime but also deep psychological insight. «Violet Evergarden» proves that animation can be a full-fledged art form capable of conveying the most complex emotions and thoughts.
«Jujutsu Kaisen 0» (2021)
The feature-length film by Studio MAPPA is an adaptation of the prequel manga «Jujutsu Kaisen», originally known as «Tokyo Metropolitan Jujutsu Technical School». The story focuses on Yuta Okkotsu, a student at the exorcist school, who hosts the powerful cursed spirit of his childhood friend Rika Orimoto. The film, unlike the series, has a darker and more focused presentation while retaining MAPPA's signature style: intense, dynamic battle scenes with impressive animation of curses and magical techniques.
The project became popular due to its perfect balance between deep drama and spectacular fights. Yuta as a main character compares favorably to many typical shonen protagonists—his motivation (grief and revenge) and development evoke genuine empathy. However, newcomers may find it difficult to immediately immerse themselves in the world of «Jujutsu Kaisen»—the film assumes at least a basic familiarity with the universe.
«Jujutsu Kaisen 0» is a rare example where a prequel not only complements the main story but stands as a powerful independent work. The film is a must-watch not only for fans of the franchise but also for all lovers of dark fantasy with high-quality animation and psychological depth.
«Look Back» (2024)
A fresh work by Kiyotaka Oshiyama , based on the eponymous one-shot by Tatsuki Fujimoto, author of the popular manga . Young manga artist Fujino gains a talented shut-in rival Kyomoto, which pushes the girl to work hard on herself. Over time, it turns out that the rival is actually a fan, so by joining forces, the artists become a creative duo and develop their first one-shot.

A short film (only 58 minutes) packed with a very tragic and emotional story about growing up, friendship, competition, the difficulties of creativity, and coping with guilt. The anime blends Fujimoto's wild style with his personal experiences and takes the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster, even within the sixty-minute runtime. «Look Back» may not be called a breakthrough in Japanese animation or a pop culture phenomenon, but it's definitely worth setting aside some time to superficially get acquainted with the inner workings of the manga industry and enjoy a subtle dramatic work.
