New classics from Alexander Payne, Hollywood's «About Fate», animation from Netflix, and Alexander Petrov as an oligarch in the 2000s. We've put together a selection of 7 fresh New Year's movies to watch during the holiday weekend, if you're tired of...
«Klaus» (2019)
A kind fairy-tale story about friendship and belief in miracles. The main character, a bitter and lonely postman, is sent to a forgotten village where all the residents have lost faith in goodness and happiness. However, his encounter with the mysterious toymaker Klaus changes everything.
The combination of stunning animation, excellent plot, and deep emotions makes «Klaus» a true masterpiece that inspires belief in miracles even in the hardest times.
«About Fate» (2022)
A new take on the classic by Eldar Ryazanov from director Marius Weisberg. Instead of snowy Moscow and Leningrad — winter Boston; instead of Zhenya — lawyer Griffin; instead of Nadya — realtor Margo. But then everything becomes very familiar: Griffin celebrates his upcoming engagement at a bathhouse with friends, who then send him to Margo's address so he can finally meet his true love.
If you're tired of watching Ryazanov's film every holiday weekend, «About Fate» can refresh the experience. But the lack of Soviet cozy charm makes it a fairly ordinary rom-com, which nevertheless fuels the holiday atmosphere.
«That Christmas» (2024)
Solid animation that continues to sow reason, goodness, and beauty — just what is missing during the hectic holiday days. Netflix understands this perfectly and regularly delights animation fans with quality releases. In 2024, such a release was the animated film , in which Santa Claus, lost in a snowstorm, helps the residents of the town of Wellington-on-Sea, who are left completely alone on Christmas Eve.
An animated film from the screenwriter of «Love Actually», following the same narrative paths, may disconcert the viewer with highlighted social issues and a far from magical atmosphere
Open materialThe director of the animated film is one of the authors of the anthology, Simon Otto. His story is quite simple, and the animation does not shine with luxury. But behind every frame hides human warmth and the artist's effort. And this makes the soul lighter.
«The Holdovers» (2023)
Last year's festival hit, which won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The Christmas drama by Alexander Payne also competed for Best Picture, but ultimately predictably lost to Christopher Nolan's «Oppenheimer». However, this did not prevent the film from becoming a New Year's classic and regularly appearing in critics' recommendations.
«The Holdovers» is not just a movie set against Christmas decorations to boost ratings. It is a sad and incredibly touching comedy about loneliness, which manifests itself especially acutely during the holiday weekend, about finding a kindred spirit and the healing power of the holiday.
«Feedback» (2020)
A group of friends, well known to us from the film «The Loud Connection», gathers to celebrate New Year in a country house. From the very beginning, the eve of the holiday does not promise to be dull: either a moose appears on the road, or Boris's mood spoils, or the lights in the village suddenly go out. And then Eva suggests playing a game to test trust in a loved one again. The atmosphere in the house begins to heat up, while the holiday dishes, on the contrary, cool on the table.
One thing you can't fault «Kvartet I» for is how they create a New Year's mood. And all because the authors know well the people's pastimes during the New Year holidays. The foolproof method was tested by them much earlier and has never failed. True, «Kvartet» does not always use exclusively their own creative forces for this, but they are forgiven.
«The Palace» (2023)
Released by Roman Polanski last year — a rather crazy (if not strange) but still funny comedy with Alexander Petrov as a wealthy Russian oligarch. The atmosphere of the New Year of the 2000s oozes from the screen along with jokes from the same period. And if anyone missed those times, they will get their share of enjoyment.
«The Palace», a dubious New Year's comedy about a failed apocalypse with cult potential, is released. About how Polanski reimagined his early film «The Fearless Vampire Killers»
Open materialPolanski here is maximally unserious and does not wish to display his venerable age with wise statements, deliberately moving the time of action to the fat 2000s. Now it would not be as fun, but back then almost anything was possible. And Polanski carefully captures the imprint of the era. He hooligans and revels like a boy until the chimes strike. And then happily falls asleep.
«Cybervillage. New Year» (2023)
A New Year's episode of the sweetest comedy about Martian farmer Nikolai and his family. For New Year, he expects his relatives on Mars to celebrate properly. But unexpectedly, all flights from Earth to Mars are canceled. Nikolai decides to see his family at all costs and invents a special teleport. However, an unforeseen breakdown occurs, and Nikolai's path to Earth becomes not as short as expected.
In the New Year's special of the beloved series, everything is wonderful: from references to «Interstellar» and Gaidai to the already signature cyberpunk atmosphere. True, everything is slightly spoiled by the absence of Sergei Burunov in the role of Robogozin. Everyone seems to have missed him even more.
