The selection opens with a film after which McConaughey stopped working on romantic comedies in an attempt to find more serious roles.
The main character, Connor Mead, is a successful and cynical photographer who doesn't believe in love but doesn't turn down women. His deceased uncle Wayne taught him how to make them fall in love. For illustration, in the first ten minutes of the film, McConaughey's character dumps three girls simultaneously via video call. A rom-com cannot preach the idea of happy and pure love with such a protagonist, so at his younger brother's wedding, Connor is visited by the ghost of his deceased uncle (Michael Douglas).
Matthew's character must embark on an imaginary journey through his past accompanied by the ghosts of ex-girlfriends to remember the faces (if names are completely hopeless) of all those whose hearts he broke. A rain of women's tears, used condoms, and Uncle Wayne's moralizing should lead the hero to the main love interest — Jenny Perotti (Jennifer Garner), a forgotten childhood and later teenage love.
«The Wedding Planner» (2001)
It's hardest to sympathize with Matthew's character in this film. Mary (Jennifer Lopez) is only interested in her job as a wedding planner; the search for great love is put on the back burner. One day she meets Steve Edison, an attractive doctor who clearly shows interest in her. However, it soon turns out that he is her client and has a wedding date set.
That's the reason why for most of the screen time you want to spit on Steve (McConaughey). His relationship with Mary often goes beyond harmless flirting. In the end, the characters will come to an understanding, and everyone will be satisfied, and the film itself is full of truly funny moments. So we recommend watching it, but be prepared to exercise your eye muscles.
«Failure to Launch» (2006)
Some strive to leave their parental home to fulfill themselves. Some dream of solitude. But the main character of this film, Tripp, does everything to avoid leaving his father's house as long as possible. His parents, quite tired of this, decide to hire a professional to make their son move out.
Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) is a beautiful and talented girl who makes a living by 're-educating' men like Tripp. Paula's main task is to make Matthew's character fall in love with her, thereby forcing him to move out. And not to fall in love herself. By the laws of the genre, problems arise with this.
The film's cast also invites you to get acquainted. In addition to the big names of Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker, the film features Zooey Deschanel ('500 Days of Summer'), Justin Bartha ('The Hangover'), and Bradley Cooper ('Limitless').
«How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days» (2003)
A cult rom-com that ranks first in Matthew McConaughey's personal top. According to the plot, journalist for a women's magazine, Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson), needs to write an article 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days'. The victim is Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey), but on his side, there is also a dishonest game. He makes a bet that he will win the girl despite visible obstacles.
The characters pursue different goals: Andie drives Benjamin crazy with her unexpected appearances and moving her things in after the third date, while McConaughey's character stoically endures it all for the sake of the bet. It's hard to find someone who hasn't seen this film, but it's worth rewatching for Kate Hudson's iconic yellow dress and the 'diamond-glazed' women of New York.
The genre of romantic comedies itself is not for all viewers. Many dislike the saccharine plot or the transmission of unrealistic love patterns. A little critical look, and the plots become more like horror or at least thrillers. But you shouldn't demand too much from the genre; it's entertainment cinema that perfectly clears the mind. And films with Matthew McConaughey are further proof of that.
