In Russian cinemas, "MaXXXine" is the final chapter of the unusual horror trilogy by Ti West. On this occasion, we recall the best roles in the career of the film's main star, the unusually versatile actress Mia Goth.
"The Survivalist"
This critically acclaimed thriller by the director is not particularly well-known in our parts. The plot of this frank slow-burner set in a post-apocalyptic setting follows two women, posing as mother and daughter, who strike a deal with a survivalist: he gives them a portion of his harvest in exchange for sexual contact with the latter, played by Mia Goth. The film is dedicated to the difficult choices of people in extreme conditions and can shock with its uncompromising nature.
Her role in "The Survivalist" earned Mia Goth her first nomination—for Best Debut at the British Independent Film Awards.
"A Cure for Wellness"
In the mystical thriller by Gore Verbinski, Mia Goth's character takes center stage in the story. The actress brilliantly embodied the role of Hannah on screen, combining in this image innocence, naivety, some mental and physiological retardation, and at the same time such attractiveness that erotic fantasies involving her even overcome the main character played by Dane DeHaan.
And, of course, we must mention the titular musical theme of Hannah with its piercing female vocals. The soundtrack by composer Benjamin Wallfisch not only became the film's calling card but also organically complemented the image of Mia Goth's character.
"Suspiria"
The arthouse horror by Luca Guadagnino is seen by many as a personal performance by Tilda Swinton, who portrayed three characters on screen, one of whom is also a man. Nevertheless, neither Dakota Johnson nor Mia Goth remained in the shadow of audience fame. The latter was entrusted with the role of Sara Simms—a kind and cheerful girl, a student at the Tanz ballet school, who, along with a newcomer from America, must uncover the dark secret of the institution.
Perhaps the most striking episode of the film (not counting, of course, the nightmare of anyone who has seen it—the dance in the mirror room) is associated with Goth's character, when she, with a broken leg and glassy eyes, joins the troupe during a performance of the piece Volk. As the actress later admitted in interviews, preparing for "Suspiria" was not easy: almost daily dance rehearsals sometimes lasted 10 hours.
"The Shadow"
This controversial horror brought together four future Hollywood stars under its roof, although it did not become a landmark project for all of them. The film starred Charlie Heaton ("Stranger Things"), George MacKay ("1917"), Anya Taylor-Joy ("The Queen's Gambit", "Furiosa"), and, of course, Mia Goth herself, who plays Jane from the Marrowbone family, a humble, balanced girl ready to take responsibility for her brothers if needed. Perhaps the most unusual role in the actress's filmography.
"Infinity Pool"
Mia Goth got the role of Gabi, a capricious rich psychopath who fully exploits the main feature of a vacation on the island of La Tolqa—the ability to avoid punishment for any crime by sacrificing her own clone. Here the actress embodied a more familiar image for her filmography. Nevertheless, it is in this role that she looks most authentic, and therefore steals every scene with her appearance.

In the first film, the actress played two heroines at once—the ambitious adult film actress Maxine Minx and the elderly sadist with erotic inclinations, on whose farm the film crew stayed. It's hard to imagine how stunned everyone was when they learned that the pretty Mia Goth, who even at 28 has the appearance of a teenage girl, played such strikingly incompatible characters.
But a true masterpiece, a real gem of her career (pun intended!), can be called her performance in the comedic slasher that tells the story of the antagonist's past from the original film. It is Mia Goth's acting that dooms the film to become a future classic of the genre. What doesn't her character do in the plot! The urge to inflict pain on all living things, akin to that of Trier's Jack, and her romanticized, almost childlike view of Hollywood and mass culture, for some reason, do not cause dissonance, but rather complement each other perfectly.
