The end of the year became associated with the series «The Boy's Word». We looked back and collected the most interesting and unusual projects of this year.
In the middle of the year, we summed up the interim series results of Russian cinema. Now it's time to take a look at the entire outgoing year and highlight the brightest projects.
Fresh themes and new heroes, the return of beloved stories – read our article about how Russian TV series entertained us in the first half of 2023.
Open materialBy tradition, projects are arranged by premiere date.
«Fisher» (more.tv, Wink, February 8)
A dark story about the search for a maniac and the last officially executed serial killer in Russia. And coincidentally, the series that began the expansion of our minds and hearts by Ivan Yankovsky in 2023.
«The King and the Jester» (Kinopoisk, March 2)
Thanks to Kinopoisk's experimental project, KISh fans remembered their youth, indulged in nostalgia for rocker days, and younger viewers learned the history of the main domestic punk band, including through a folk tale.
«Frozen Ground» (Wink, April 7)
One of the most popular series of last spring is based on an investigative article by Taisiya Bekbulatova «The Road to Askiz» about serial maniac Dmitry Lebed.
Through this local story, one can examine global problems of the modern world. False public accusations without evidence, miscarriages of justice, and complex relationships between people who just yesterday seemed closest.
«Live Life» (START, April 13)
What to do when it seems that life no longer makes sense? Or when instead of a relationship, you feel like you are being drawn into a terrible game where the price is your life?
That's exactly what the series «Live Life» is about, helping you find yourself and understand how to move forward in any situation.
«The Mystery of the Lost Village» (IVI, April 20)
A comedy series with crazy humor about secrets, disappearances, and evil forces in a quiet Russian hinterland. A clear illustration of what would happen if they decided to make a documentary about the events of the series «Topi», and everything went wrong.
«Volunteer's Playlist» (Okko, May 18)
The second series with Ivan Yankovsky, which deservedly makes it into the recommended list this year. A subtle work about people, their relationships, emotions, and self-discovery. With good music.
«Raycenter» (IVI, June 23)
«Raycenter» is both a black satire on human relationships and a wild comedy with notes of nostalgia for the wild times, where there is room not only for deception but also for love and friendship. Such a bizarre symbiosis.
«The Librarian» (more.tv, Wink, June 29)
It's been a long time since Russian screens saw fantasy that combines all the beloved genre techniques but in Russian realities. After watching, you believe in the future and want to read books or at least go to the library. And even the brutal dismemberment on screen doesn't interfere.
«May I Address You?» (IVI, July 20)
A comedy series about the life of a domestic werewolf, which largely reveals the problems of «fathers and children» with a light addition of toxic elements.
«AlfaRomeo» (START, August 18)
A comedy series that tried to seriously talk about feminism, value judgments in society, and the fact that a person needs dialogue. And in the end, it just became a pleasant story about the relationships of singles in a big city.
«A Big Change» (START, September 1)
An educational and instructive work that helps you review the literature course and also believe in good things. Nostalgic music, memories of school – the perfect combination for evening viewing. The obligatory Nikita Efremov is included.
«Black Cloud» (Okko, September 7)
An inventive psychological thriller that overturns your opinion of it as you watch. If the first episodes seem simple, boring, and even uninteresting, you should wait a bit. Believe me, it can not only surprise you but the whole project as well.
Russian cinema is undergoing an active generational change, new names and faces are appearing on the horizon, and it's time to start following them now.
Open material«Cybervillage» (Kinopoisk, September 23)
One of the most talked-about domestic projects on YouTube has made it to its own series on Kinopoisk. And it hasn't lost its charm, inventiveness, soulfulness, and humor along the way. Even the intrusive advertising of the payment system won't spoil the overall impression. And don't forget the New Year's special episode – viewers were treated to references to «Interstellar», «Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri», and even «Fantastic Beasts».
«Sex. Before... and After» (Okko, October 12)
The directorial debut of actress Daria Moroz. Stylish, frank, heartfelt. Because sometimes in relationships, only one thing is missing – just to talk.
«Cicadas» (Kinopoisk, October 26)
There is an opinion that modern children are too cruel. But why does this happen? After all, the problem may not only be in them but also in those around them.
What makes people go against each other, and what can make them unite? That's exactly what the series «Cicadas» is about. Some compare it to «Elite», but our project turned out to be more emotional and definitely more «our own».
«Magic Precinct» (Okko, November 9)
What would happen if magical creatures known to us from fairy tales since childhood ended up on the streets of Moscow? The result is an emotional and comedic project about Lyokha, who masterfully, like a fairy-tale hero, performs feats and creates a magical mood for viewers before the New Year. Yankovsky is included, though Filipp.
«The Boy's Word. Blood on the Asphalt» (Start, November 9)
Here is the third project of Ivan Yankovsky, which only the laziest haven't heard about. The series sparked discussions and debates about the possibility of romanticizing violence through art. It enriched our vocabulary with slang words that everyone in our and your circle has heard or uttered at least once. And the song «Pyala» became the anthem of on-screen ultraviolence. An undoubted hit and a great success for Zhora Kryzhovnikov, previously known to many for «Gorko!»
«Cerberus» (Premier, November 23)
Last year, we watched the world of the Decembrists with interest in the series version of «Union of Salvation». This year, Premier created a detective story about the events that followed the suppression of the famous uprising.
Again, immersion in 19th-century St. Petersburg, political intrigues, and a fascinating duo of Sergei Marin and Alexander Gorbatov. Both Groms on one screen – that's no joke!
«Alice's Dreams» (Premier, December 7)
This series can safely be called the domestic «Twin Peaks» in winter. Here you will find strange signs, mysterious disappearances, incredible events, and even magic, but people still come first.
Let's not forget about the continuations of beloved series – this year we again walked around the children's camp in the second season of «Pishcheblok», tried to crack computer codes in the second season of «Offline», and also sought balance in relationships in the new seasons of «Container» and «The Kept Women».
Which series did you remember the most in 2023?
