We talk about the new Hungarian-Slovak project “White Plastic Sky”, a multi-layered animated film that has something to offer a demanding audience.

The Hungarian animated dystopian film “White Plastic Sky” tells about a future that will come in just 100 years — in 2123. And this future is not at all rosy. Planet Earth is more like Mars. It is scorched to the ground, and there is no place for all living things on it anymore. Only oxygen remains, a small city under a plastic dome, and a special plantation where a new species of trees is grown.

People under the dome, or rather, under the hood, have a decent life: they eat in a restaurant with a view, have fun in a club, and live in minimalist apartments equipped with the latest technology. They have excellent medicine, and the whole family or close ones are nearby. It resembles modern Moscow life in 2023.

However, in 2123, people's lives are strictly limited — they live exactly 50 years, and then their bodies belong to the city. On their 50th birthday, every resident must become a donor of their entire body. A seed is implanted into their heart, and the flesh serves as fertile soil for plants from which food is obtained for those who are still living or will live. Surprisingly, life continues, but in a different form.

The plantation is a direct homage to “The Matrix”, where humanity was also a resource. And the implantation procedure is very similar to Paul Atreides’ initiation in . Perhaps more attentive movie buffs will notice other references to famous works of world cinema.

Let's talk about Denis Villeneuve's “Dune” from two points of view: someone who has read Frank Herbert's books and someone who first encounters the planet Arrakis and the conflict unfolding around it.

It is better to start a family in the wonderful new world in youth, so that by the end you can see your grandchildren. Yes, the family values of the future are no different from modern ones. “White Plastic Sky” devotes a lot of space to family and relationships.

The main characters are husband Stefan and wife Nora, who have suffered a misfortune, and their entire conflict revolves around this. The woman looks like an egoist, she is deeply unhappy and sees no meaning in earthly existence. For her, voluntary implantation is a kind of suicide, because she cannot bear the feeling of loss.

The man here is a rescuer. And the geneticist professor who came up with turning people into trees acts as God. Nora and Stefan in his garden are Adam and Eve who disobeyed the creator.

Love and close relationships in this film can save a human life or completely destroy it. Everyone chooses for themselves how to view the end of this film. Perhaps we are seeing the next stage of evolution.

In any case, “White Plastic Sky” is a reminder that we don’t have much time, and it’s up to us to choose what to spend it on: on suffering, other people’s desires and worries about what others will think, or on what is valuable to us, on what brings joy and adds meaning to our lives.
