The Victim's Identity
In the second episode of 'Only Murders in the Building,' we are gradually introduced to the victim, Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), star of the series 'CoBro' and 'Girl Cop,' to further pique our interest in the murder investigation.
But it happens in a very interesting way. For example, we get a taste of Mabel's (Selena Gomez) perspective through her imagined conversation with Ben's ghost, which helps her better understand her personal crisis. After all, when you're 29 and you can be kicked out of your own home just like that, a crisis is unavoidable.
She experiences Ben's death even more acutely than she might need to. Plus, in her imagination, he looks and behaves a bit differently than we're used to seeing, as if he's acquiring more human traits. The reason Mabel singles out this particular actor will be revealed a little later.
'Only Murders in the Building' at the Funeral
Meanwhile, Oliver (Martin Short) tries to save his own situation by sneaking into Ben's funeral and attempting to find producers Donna (Linda Emond) and Cliff (Wesley Taylor) DeMayo there, hoping to persuade them to give the play another chance.
The plan immediately goes awry because Oliver, who brought Mabel and Charles (Steve Martin) along, is directed to the wrong room. Specifically, the room showing only a video recording of the funeral, while the producers are right in the thick of things.
While Oliver tries to devise a plan to get into the right room, Charles and Mabel meet Greg (Adrian Martinez), who introduces himself as Ben's security guard and offers crucial information for the new season of the 'Only Murders in the Building' podcast. They just need to visit Greg at his place...

Time to Talk
Greg's apartment is filled with numerous items somehow connected to Ben Glenroy and his roles. And the more items the characters see, the more doubts arise about Greg's identity. Is he who he claims to be? Mabel and Charles don't get a chance to fully process this because they are effectively knocked out.
Chained together in a very dubious basement, the colleagues from the 'Only Murders in the Building' podcast find more time to talk to each other about Ben. It turns out that in its time, 'Girl Cop' was the show that helped Mabel reconnect with her mother after her father's death.
For Charles, judging by his memories, things with the deceased were not so rosy. Once, Charles prevented an eight-year-old actor from appearing in his Brazzos series. And Ben remembered that. However, instead of kicking Charles out of the production, he vowed to make the entire process a living nightmare for his elderly colleague. And apparently, he kept his promise.
The conversation is interrupted by Greg, who could be considered an obsessed maniac who killed Ben, but he mourns the star so sincerely that he no longer seems like such an obvious suspect. That doesn't stop him from being arrested by the arriving police for kidnapping Charles and Mabel.
And what about Oliver? Not having made it to the funeral, he runs into an old acquaintance, theater critic Maxine (Noma Dumezweni). Knowing she attended the premiere of 'Death Rattle,' Oliver asks Maxine to share her thoughts on the production, hoping it might rekindle the producers' interest.
My Heart Stopped
However, he hears something completely unexpected. According to Maxine, 'Death Rattle' is boring, dull, and completely lacks the spark that was present even in Oliver Putnam's worst productions. Now, the death of the lead star seems like the least of the play's problems. This news throws Oliver into real shock, resulting in a heart attack.
The doctor advises Oliver to avoid any stress from now on. This verdict is wholeheartedly supported by Oliver's son, Will (Ryan Broussard). It is right there, at home, during couch rest, that Oliver has an epiphany in the form of a sudden hallucination of a musical number. Specifically – Mabel, Charles, and Will in 'Chicago'-esque costumes with Bob Fosse choreography. Yes, we are also in shock, dear listeners.
Just as Oliver is about to announce to the arriving Mabel and Charles that he has decided to turn 'Death Rattle' into a musical, they joyfully tell him that the 'Only Murders in the Building' podcast has officially begun a new investigation.
Because in the photos of the body that Mabel managed to take, Ben is holding one of the handkerchiefs he gave to his fellow actors in the play. That means they need to find the person who doesn't have a handkerchief.
