On August 17, a bold, subtle, beautiful, and sincere film about female friendship, “Like Stars,” hits the big screens. We tell you why you should watch it.

“Like Stars” is a blend of all the coolest and most awesome films and series about the path to a dream, about love and passion for the acting profession, and about relationships that can withstand a lot. Incorporating all the best, the film lightly tells the story of the lives of two actresses, flirting with the viewer, but without descending into vulgarity.

This is the feature-length debut of Maria Loiter, created with friends and close people, co-authored with Natalia Zemtsova and Nadezhda Ivanova, who played the lead roles. The story is strikingly similar to real life, at times not even hiding its less pleasant sides.

They meet right away — Masha, who voices cartoons and looks like a cartoon herself with bright hair, and Sonya, a budding actress from Omsk who knows her worth and appears on screen each time as a true femme fatale in recognizable outfits of famous movie heroines. They are very different, but completely alike in their desire to become famous actresses, although, as expected, one of them doesn’t admit it right away.

The girls make themselves known from the very start, both to the audience and to everyone around. They are bold, yet at the same time very vulnerable. Bright, and most importantly — alive. They don’t pretend to be someone else; they are just as they are. It’s hard to believe, but on screen you really see ordinary people. Sometimes you even forget you’re watching a movie — you laugh along with the heroines, you want to joke back. And you also want this movie to never end.

And while nothing particularly extraordinary seems to happen, over the entire duration of the film you can experience not just a range, but a whole melody of different feelings. This is not a Cinderella fairy tale — there is not a single handsome prince, although, of course, there are men they dream about. It’s very refreshing that even sex is shown here not as a beautiful fairy tale and the ultimate dream of one of the heroines, but as an ordinary, most routine life situation.

The characters make many mistakes, reflect, and move on. After all, the main message, though simple, is so important — to pursue your dream, no matter what anyone says along the way. Masha and Sonya make their choice, even if it differs from someone else’s ideas of happiness and success. Just like us — ordinary people. And also, each of us has that little piece of a fallen star. We are all like stars.
