The series “Beyond the Lighthouse” continues the theme of domestic maniacs on our digital platforms. How did the first two episodes turn out, is it difficult not to stay at the bottom of the pit — you will find out from our material.

The series “Beyond the Lighthouse” takes the baton from its screen counterparts — the projects “Fisher” and “Frozen Ground”. But still, this story differs from its counterparts. And here’s why.

The Story of the Pit

The series is based on Ilya Bushmin’s novel “No Man’s Land” and tells the story of the search for a dangerous strangler. This title was even attached to the project for some time.

Investigator Ekaterina Mazurova (Tatyana Cherdyntseva) and operative Sergei Polyakov (Alexei Bardukov) witnessed tragic events in their youth in their hometown of Beyond the Lighthouse, which afterwards earned the unflattering nickname “The Pit”. One day at work, Ekaterina is informed that the bodies of three girls have been found near her hometown, strangled over a year ago and left in the basement of an abandoned house, and she is assigned to lead the case. Now Katya and Sergei must meet again to finally deal with the past once and for all.

The series’ events take place across two timelines — 2001 and 1990.

The Inhabitants of the Pit

The first two episodes of “Beyond the Lighthouse” consistently introduce us to the series’ characters, only occasionally reminding us of why we are all here — the deeds of the maniac.

At first, we meet Ekaterina and learn about her life — preparation for admission, family relationships. All these scenes are illuminated by bright sun, the picture is warm and cheerful. This continues until the moment the crimes begin.

In 2001, the picture changes dramatically, not only emotionally and in the characters’ behavior, but also visually. Now we are surrounded by dark colors, muted light, and actions mostly take place either at night or within four walls. And if we are in the Pit, it is mostly cloudy all around.

In her new life, we see how Katya tries to cope with her new fate. She is in a relationship; from the first scenes, it even seems ideal. But the further we go through the narrative, the more we understand that Katya has never let go of the old story. And the investigation plunges her even deeper into this “pit”.

Sergei is introduced in a similar manner. Only through him do we see more immersion into the actual operative work, and it is thanks to his actions that we understand how the investigation is progressing and what this unknown, unloved Pit consists of.

The Fate of the Pit

The first two episodes do not yet allow you to fully feel the series. We are as if in the shoes of the main characters. We understand that something terrifying, heavy, and something that will turn our understanding of the story upside down is about to happen.

However, Ekaterina and Sergei have one advantage — they have already lived through the most terrible events committed by the maniac in 1990. The viewer has yet to go through them, and from the first two victims it becomes clear that the spectacle will not be for the faint of heart. And, as Ekaterina’s psychiatrist said, the only way to end all this is to catch the criminal. Let’s keep watching.
