On July 27, the Spanish comedy drama «What Strangers Talk About» hits the big screens. We tell you how this funny film speaks about important things.

At the center of the plot of “What Strangers Talk About” are three couples of strangers who find themselves in the same space when they come for their next appointment with their psychologist. Only instead of the therapist, eight envelopes with different tasks await them, both individual and group. And while at first this whole group therapy idea really looks like a fun experiment, by the end viewers are in for a very unexpected twist.

All three couples have been together for several years, they are roughly the same age, but have completely different worldviews. The joint conversation and discussion of situations begins with talk about children, smoothly flowing into other problems and secrets within each couple.

In the first couple, who have been together for only three years, everything seems fine, but there are secrets. The second couple has been together for a very long time, and both have many grievances against each other. And the third couple is the most mysterious and interesting. Both are just over forty, with the husband being an active man raised in the old ways, and the wife a quiet and very modest woman who seems not even to have her own opinion, but that is only at first glance.

In their couple, Roberto (Juan Carlos Vellido) is undoubtedly the head. He makes all the decisions, including through physical violence. Not at home, of course, but in conflicts with other parents. Marta (Malena Alterio) is quiet, not used to arguing with her husband. But it was she who once sought help from a psychologist, and then persuaded her spouse to attend at least this one session of couples therapy.

The envelopes are opened one after another, as are the problems in each couple. Everything is brought up for discussion—from relationships within the family to first meetings and questions about sex. Each time, Marta timidly but very accurately asks interesting questions. And here the viewer realizes that this woman is actually not as simple as she seems. This is precisely where a parallel can be seen with the ostentatious “happy” family life—when everything looks great from the outside, but if you dig deeper, many unpleasant details come to light.

Roberto almost never lets Marta express her opinion, and when asked about their shared sex life, he flies into a rage. From the very beginning, this man shows himself to be someone raised in rigid patriarchal frameworks, where only he can be the head of the family.

Unhappy Marta gradually opens up, not without the help of alcohol, with which she has problems, but still she has the courage to tell the truth, no matter how difficult it is. This is where that very unexpected moment occurs, towards which the characters have been moving throughout the entire film.

The story actually touches not only on ordinary disagreements in couples, but also on much more serious things that are usually not talked about. In this sense, “What Strangers Talk About” is a bold statement, albeit in plain language. One hopes that these topics will be discussed more and more.
