The Story of Kotov

Gosha Kotov works in law enforcement. He dreams of becoming as brave and strong as his legendary father, a police officer who died in the line of duty back in the 1990s. However, Gosha differs from his parent in his cowardice and lack of self-confidence. But everything changes when Kotov is bitten by an infected dog – he gains super strength and transforms into a werewolf.

The Setting and Its Inhabitants

The premiere of the series «» has only just died down, and it feels as if we never left. Before us is the small town of Srednekamsk. Modest houses, typical Russian residents, whom we saw in «Raitsentr» or «Vampires of the Middle Zone». But there is one thing – something is always happening in this city. And it's not at all about paranormal phenomena.

In the first episodes, we get to know the main characters. We will experience the story together with Gosha (Andrey Galchenko), Den (Daniil Kiselyov), and Lena (Anna Zavtur). Lena is an eco-activist who tries her best to preserve the nature and animals of the city. The global poisonings are caused by the Motor plant, which is run by Den's father – Korchagin (Rostislav Bershaueur).

Another activist and person trying to change everything is Den. And his impulses are not clear from the first minutes of the series. Daniil Kiselyov seems to have received a carte blanche from the studio here for his small role in «Raitsentr».

Here his acting can be fully appreciated. At some moments, it seems that Den is a man of the future, exploding into the quiet «swamp» of life in Srednekamsk. The scene of a joint psychological training for the security guys from the 90s is simply captivating. Then his impulses become sharply personal, and it seems he no longer wants to change the world, but simply craves Lena's attention. And after that, all his pain in his relationship with his father is felt, and his motives change their focus again.

Of course, Andrey Galchenko performs major acting transformations. Here it's not just about physical preparation and imitating the classic movements of cinematic werewolves, but also internal transformations due to the hero's experiences. We meet him as a timid, constantly stuttering, naive guy. After the bite, Kotov slowly, accepting his nature, begins to behave more confidently, and most importantly, directs his abilities towards good causes. How good the scene in the third episode with the night arrests is in this regard! Andrey's facial expressions and voice at that moment deserve applause.

Add to this the charismatic supporting cast in the form of Den's father, the coach, and Kotov's department team, consisting of Rykov (Nikita Volkov) and the Matyushenko brothers.

What Awaits the Residents of Srednekamsk?

The most interesting thing is that the series doesn't immediately throw us into the adventures of a police-werewolf. The transformation itself only happens in the third episode. Until that moment, viewers tactfully get to know the characters, understand their fears and problems.

Each episode seems to have been filmed in a specific style. The first was like a comedy with absurd situations and sharp jokes. The second episode differs in both color scheme and story presentation. The events mostly take place in the dark, and the episode largely resembles an hour-long blockbuster, where viewers are introduced to the habitat of evil. But the third one exudes the style of various horrors. It builds suspense and a disturbing atmosphere.

The main feature of the project is that despite the declared mysticism and theme of werewolves, the series turned out to be more about people and their relationships. The big toxic plant that harms the city becomes a metaphor for toxic relationships. Between people, between a man and a woman, parents and a child. Everyone feels the harm, but no one wants to do anything about it. But perhaps this is where a superhero is needed, albeit a little shaggy, but with a very kind heart.

«We ended up with a very voluminous, deep story. This is a non-standard project at the intersection of several genres: the viewer will immerse themselves in a world of fiction and truth, humor and depth, good and evil, and even a world of fantasy. On set, there was always a creatively positive atmosphere, charged for results.
