We talk about the film “La Chimera,” the new work of Italian director Alice Rohrwacher, which did not receive Cannes awards but won the hearts of audiences.

I already want to rewatch “La Chimera” (La Chimera) by Alice Rohrwacher. And then again. After “Happy as Lazzaro,” which was beautifully received in Cannes a few years ago, the director presented the public with a new masterpiece. This time with British actor Josh O’Connor, who, by the way, speaks Italian flawlessly for 99% of the film, and Isabella Rossellini.

Without plot spoilers, this is a story about archaeologist tomb raiders who sell their finds to museums to make a living. Josh’s character, Arthur, is one of them. Only he has a useful gift: he physically senses where the digging spot is.

Rohrwacher’s amazing magical realism envelops us completely and carries us to central Italy of different times, allowing us to walk with Arthur on his path, which lies on the border between the living and the dead, the past and the present, a path where the main character is constantly searching for something. He digs deeper and deeper, never stopping, to regain what was lost, taken away by fate.

The film’s creator resorts to her favorite mythological metaphors, but they are more accessible and easier to perceive than in “Happy as Lazzaro.” The mysticism present does not vulgarize or simplify the plot, but frames it qualitatively, leveling unnecessary reality. It’s as if we have the opportunity to visit different worlds together with the main character.

“La Chimera” is one of the most touching, intriguing, and unusual in its presentation stories of love and self-discovery, a journey from darkness to light and complete liberation.

Without a doubt, another breakthrough for the immensely talented Josh O’Connor. The entire supporting cast is beyond praise, a brilliant charismatic ensemble.

A special “bravo” to the cinematography by Hélène Louvart. The camera work greatly helps to track important semantic aspects.

“La Chimera” is a true treasure of Cannes 2023, with a taste of an unattainable and strange dream that lies in the meaningful title, which you want to carry away in your heart.
