In 2018, Sony Pictures Animation released the animated film 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse', which became a real hit, not only grossing well but also winning all major awards, including the Oscar. At that time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe didn't even hint at a multiverse, and almost no one thought about a union of three cinematic spiders. Sony, meanwhile, inspired by the 'Spider-Verse' comics, brought together completely different friendly neighbors into one team and didn't miscalculate (spider-sense worked perfectly). Of course, talk of a sequel started even before the first part's release, but it only reached the big screen five years later. What can I say? The expectations were clearly worth it.

'Across the Spider-Verse' begins with a prologue dedicated (surprisingly) not to Peter Parker or Miles Morales, but to Gwen Stacy. In her universe (Earth-65B), she continues to fight crime, but is consumed by depression over the loss of a very close friend, whose death her cop father blames on the girl, or rather Spider-Woman. Gwen misses her friends from other dimensions terribly (especially Miles), but one day, the Vulture from the Renaissance Era universe is thrown onto Earth-65B.
It turns out that such phenomena are multiversal anomalies caused by some event that created a rift between dimensions (for example, the collider incident from the first part or Strange's spell from 'No Way Home'). Spider-Man 2099 / Miguel O'Hara and a pregnant Black Spider-Woman / Jessica Drew come to Gwen's aid, and after the battle, they accept her into the secret Spider Society, which deals with such inter-dimensional troubles.
Meanwhile, on his Earth-1610B, Miles Morales has been handling the duties of Spider-Man for a year and four months. He has upgraded his abilities and made himself a new suit, but hasn't yet learned to balance school and fighting crime. His parents think the guy is a bit irresponsible and don't understand the reasons for their son's behavior, who is always late everywhere. So, Miles was very late for a meeting with the school principal because he was fighting a new villain called the Spot, who can create inter-dimensional portals. It turns out the Spot is another multiversal anomaly that the Spider Society sends Gwen to deal with. But everything doesn't go according to plan (as if it ever does), and the friends end up embarking on a new exciting adventure across dimensions, where they will meet a whole bunch of new Spider-People.
Far From Home
Spider-Man is one of the most popular superheroes on the planet, so it's no surprise that he constantly appears on big and small screens. And there are also games, figures, merch, and so on. Why list it all if Peter Parker himself already explained it in the animated film 'Into the Spider-Verse'? People truly love the friendly neighbor, and if he's not alone, it's bound to cause fan frenzy. Five years ago, Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman gave viewers a real Spider-Holiday with a setup for a sequel, so expectations for the continuation were cranked up to the max.
'Across the Spider-Verse' changed directors to Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin Thompson, but didn't lose any quality. Work was in full swing for almost all five years, as the creators were essentially making two projects at once, because the conceived story turned out to be too large for one film. The pandemic, of course, also made its adjustments, but considering how long the third part took to reach screens, the sequel to 'Spider-Man' can be said to have suffered almost nothing from the coronavirus.

When new Spider-People (and not only) appear on screen, you want to immediately hit pause and very carefully examine the frames, studying each character, because they are all unique.
It would be great if an encyclopedia with all the noticed arachnids came out as an appendix. Oh, the extra money would pour into Sony's piggy bank. One of the directors mentioned in an interview that 'Across the Spider-Verse' incorporates about 280 different Spider-People, and, you know, when you watch the film, you readily believe it, because a real Spider-Pocalypse is happening on screen.
By the way, the scene partially shown in the trailer, where a whole crowd of Spiders chases Miles, took four whole years to make, because there were so many characters, and each one needed to be animated manually. Such facts speak of 'Spider-Man' as a painstaking and labor-intensive work, to which the creators approached with all their soul and seriousness. It's obvious that the sequel will also compete for all major film awards and will pose serious competition to giants like Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks, etc.
'Across the Spider-Verse' is not just great entertainment cinema. It's a project that contains something more than an interesting story. Various important themes are raised here: the seriousness of psychological health, parenting issues, the burden of responsibility, choosing a life path, and much more. This is an animated film in the best sense of the word. It's interesting for both children and adults to watch. No one will definitely be bored. And in addition, everyone will take something away for themselves after watching, and isn't that wonderful?
High Voltage
The sequel to 'Spider-Man' is made at the highest level. The cinematography and direction are incredibly cool. Camera fly-throughs, location detailing, editing — everything is done just masterfully. Sony again imitates comic book drawing, but at the same time gives each Spider and their universe its own style.
Earth-65B, where Gwen lives, changes its color palette depending on the heroine's mood. Miles' dimension matches his carefree character. The Spot's inner world is made in black and white tones, as is the antagonist himself. Around Spider-Punk, some kind of animation anarchy is constantly happening. And the Vulture seems to have fluttered out of the pages of Leonardo da Vinci's own diary. What colossal work this is. If rumors that the film's budget does not exceed $100 million are true, then it's simply amazing what can be achieved if you make a project not only for profit but also out of love for cinema and animation in general.
I would also really like to highlight the soundtrack. Last time it was simply amazing, and the song 'Sunflower' performed by Post Malone and Swae Lee became a real hit. Back then, the album also featured XXXTentacion, Lil Wayne, Juice WRLD, and many others. But this time, the list of big names has become even larger, and the songs have become even more hit-worthy. The music production was handed over to, perhaps, the best beatmaker of recent years — Metro Boomin, and the release itself gathered stars no worse than on DJ Khaled's albums. Here we have 21 Savage, Future, A$AP Rocky, 2 Chainz, and the already familiar Swae Lee. The album for the sequel can be safely placed alongside the best rap soundtracks for 'Black Panther' and 'Fast & Furious' (excluding the last two installments).
Everything you want to say about 'Across the Spider-Verse' is how cool it is. Even the Air Jordan and Sony ads look chic here, not like in . What's happening on screen is so mesmerizing that the film's flaws are completely invisible (if they exist) and you don't want to look for them. Of course, you can find fault with any project. For example, say that we've all long known what lies behind any Spider and what his relationship with family and friends is. But if these are key events of any Spider-biography, then why criticize the repetitions in the film? The cartoon simply embodies what 'Spider-Man' should be: dynamic, bright, deep, funny, crazy, intelligent, and mesmerizing.

It will be interesting not to some small part of the audience, but to almost every viewer, because it's universal cinema capable of giving the brightest emotions. Moderate fan service, unexpected cameos, and the unification of all Spider-verses into one big Web will clearly please connoisseurs, and the cliffhanger ending will make you eagerly await the conclusion of Miles Morales' story. And if the third part was made with the same love as the previous two, then good box office, audience delight, and flattering press reviews will also be guaranteed. Go, Miles, don't let us down, this is your story.
