In a world where everyone has superpowers, a girl searches for her power, but actually for her true self. "Extraordinary" is a new success from Hulu, which simultaneously reminds of "Fleabag" and "Misfits," but has a completely unique narrative tone.

In the world of the series "Extraordinary", on the day of coming of age, every person receives a unique superpower. Some become able to summon fish from the ocean, others can use their rear end as a 3D printer, and still others get classic superhero skills like flying or super speed.

But the main character, Jen (Máiréad Tyers), never got a power. At 25, she works in a party supply store, but life doesn't feel so festive because she is "ordinary" in her ordinariness. However, Jen isn't about to give up easily, and she's willing to go to great lengths to discover her power.

Identity Crisis

In the manner of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character in "Fleabag," Jen engages in self-examination and tries to find her place, while resolving personal problems piling up from all sides with typically British humor. She's also hopelessly in love with a handsome guy who can fly, so she really, really needs her own power.

The series "Extraordinary," under the guise of a 100% comedy project (each of the 8 half-hour episodes of the debut season is packed to the brim with humorous punchlines and one-liners), talks about serious things. The other central characters, like the main heroine, are also trying to find their voice and purpose in life.

Jen's roommate Carrie (Sofia Oxenham), who can summon the dead (there is a hilariously touching episode with summoning Hitler to comfort Tyers' character), tries to step out of her friend's shadow and start talking about her feelings and desires.

Carrie's boyfriend Kash (Bilal Hasna), who can rewind time but not by much, is a burden on his girlfriend but dreams of proving his worth, for which he starts gathering superheroes to fight injustice.

Humor and Heart

The new project from Hulu, although it incorporates features of other more famous and successful British series (besides the aforementioned "Fleabag," it's easy to see similarities with "Misfits," where superpowers were also far from obvious, and the main character went without "specialties" for a long time), has its own completely unique charm.

The jokes are good-natured, the situations are relatable even if you watch the series from the banks of the Neva rather than the Thames, and the characters are charming in their quirkiness. The latter is especially evident in the case of the character who turns from a human into a cat and back, retaining the features of each state.

"Extraordinary" is a case where borrowing ideas and reinterpreting them is done creatively. Hell, it even has its own Doctor Dolittle who talks to animals, but... let's avoid spoilers. A cinephile's soul is only happy with such references.

So this is not "another superhero series" that even the most ardent fans of superpowers seem tired of, but a heartfelt show for those who miss sweet and everyday stories, only lightly seasoned with extraordinariness and an understanding from the creators that their viewers don't live in a vacuum and can see analogies and references.
