On the most romantic day of the year, let's recall how unusual relationships blossomed during dates in our favorite (or simply interesting) films. Some take an unexpected turn, some make us think, but all are curious in their own way and worth a rewatch. It's Valentine's Day, after all.

«(500) Days of Summer» (2009)

Dates don't have to happen only in cafes or cinemas – characters played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel decide to turn a simple trip to IKEA into a real romantic adventure. Their conversation simultaneously parodies classic films about average American families – and is full of humor and grotesquery, offset by the presence of other store visitors. The date scene makes a particularly strong impression when compared to the IKEA visit scene later in their relationship. 

«You've Got Mail» (1998)

An interesting approach to a movie date – making one of the participants unaware that they are even on a date. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks play two people who met anonymously online but hate each other in real life. Hanks' character gets the chance to find out who his online friend is and decides not to reveal all his cards – what was planned as a date turns into a sharp exchange of witticisms against a backdrop of obvious and sudden attraction.

«Chasing Amy» (1996)

If you don't know what the film is about, the first meeting between Holden (Ben Affleck) and Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams) could be considered one of the most pleasant and simple dates on our list. But if you know that at their next meeting, Alyssa will be French-kissing another girl... That sweet conversation over a game of darts doesn't seem so romantic anymore, does it?

«Office Romance» (1977)

A classic of Soviet cinema gave us one of the most memorable date scenes. Lyudmila Prokofyevna (Alisa Freindlich), wanting to impress the shy Anatoly Efremovich (Andrei Myagkov), puts on her best dress and can't decide if her outfit is appropriate. The touching embarrassment and genuine interest of two people who didn't plan to fall in love with each other makes the scene especially heartfelt. And joint cat rescues always bring people together.

«Some Like It Hot» (1959)

As with any good scene, this date has a little twist – Sugar (Marilyn Monroe) has no idea that her millionaire companion (Tony Curtis) actually plays in the same all-female jazz band as her and knows much more about her than he should on a first date. And he doesn't hesitate to take advantage of it. The sexual tension on the yacht is so palpable you could cut it with a knife.

«Hitch» (2005)

This date between the shy accountant Albert (Kevin James) and socialite Allegra (Amber Valletta) takes place under the patronage of Dr. Hitch (Will Smith) – but still doesn't go according to plan. The funny, awkward, but very sincere interaction between such different characters wins you over and makes you believe that real, deep feelings can arise between them even without the help of a love expert. At least, when you loosen up and believe in yourself.

«Ed Wood» (1994)

An amusement park, two nice young people, one ride through a tunnel of horrors – and a secret that could have doomed the relationship in its infancy. But the fact that Ed Wood (Johnny Depp) likes to wear women's clothing doesn't bother Kathy (Patricia Arquette) at all – and it's just a breath of fresh air for the hapless director. Truly, sometimes the best relationships start with dates like this, full of trust and mutual understanding.

«Knocked Up» (2007)

Girls, imagine your first official date happens when you already know you're pregnant by your companion. Yes, the characters played by Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl had it just as awkwardly as you imagined. Especially considering how seemingly unsuited they are for each other and how unprepared they are to have a child. Well, not everything that starts badly ends badly.

«Love and Pigeons» (1984)

Most often, it's the first dates that leave a special impression in movies – but «Love and Pigeons» takes a different path and shows us a date after the spouses have separated. The characters played by Alexander Mikhailov and Nina Doroshina try to understand each other and figure out how to live on, leading to an unexpected scene of passionate reconciliation.

«Annie Hall» (1977)

Viewers sometimes get a chance that the conversation participants in the movie don't – namely, to see their hidden thoughts, even if only in the form of subtitles. Behind the elaborate intellectual conversation about photography, Alvy (Woody Allen) is actually hiding a desire to say how attracted he is to Annie (Diane Keaton), who in turn can't contain her own complexes and self-doubt. Life would be much easier if we said what was on our minds, wouldn't it?
