Part 1: Racing Against Time
No sooner have Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), Charles Savage (Steve Martin), and Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) reunited after their separate adventures than they must save Charles’s daughter Lucy (Zoe Colletti). It seems she will be the next victim of the criminal, as she saw him on the night of the murder—and so we rush headlong to the Arconia.
Since the events take place during a power plant outage, naturally there is no light in the entire Arconia. Today, this will create an astonishing atmosphere of helplessness and mutual assistance.
Beyond the main quest, several side stories await us—at last, our cat lover Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) gets a full-fledged storyline involving a handsome new neighbor, and the newly delivered president of the building board, Nina Lin (Christine Ko), takes the opportunity to get to know her mentee, the doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca). This is an undeniable plus, as watching the characters is truly interesting.
Part 2: A Big Fan of the Podcast “Only Murders in the Building”
As has happened for several episodes in a row, “Only Murders in the Building” does not actively search for and find answers to questions, but stumbles upon them by accident. Thus, a real threat leads Lucy, and with her our trio, to the Arcatacombs (but not before we get a couple of extremely funny scenes with Oliver and his love for sauces).
Before following the characters further, I want to highlight a funny meta-moment the creators of the series have given us—specifically, the fans of the podcast “Only Murders in the Building,” who (as if echoing the series’ viewers) complain about the stagnation of the investigation. It’s funny. I like it.
The star and narrator of this episode is Marv (Daniel Oreskes), who is not about to abandon his favorite podcast because of a few filler episodes and beats the trio to the Arcatacombs, just in time to scare the killer away from Lucy. Thus, we find ourselves at a dead end again—the killer has escaped, and all we can do is feel sorry for Marv and wish him to find a healthier way to reconnect with his daughter.
And some marginal notes—once in the catacombs, the characters immediately get lost in the twists and turns of the corridors, so the scene where the residents of the Arconia pick up “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel (mixed with the rather interesting yodeling by Howard) makes an astonishingly strong impression. Loss, fear, hesitation, yet a desire to add one’s voice to the common chorus—all of this works for the scene. Truly, hello, darkness, my old friend…
Part 3: The Glitter Guy
The episode ends with the heroes, as we have said, losing track of Lucy’s pursuer, but Mabel accidentally discovers the identity of the Glitter Guy—it turns out to be the creepy detective Kreps (Michael Rapaport). Oliver was right: getting rid of those damn glitter flecks can be extremely difficult. And what conclusions does this lead us to?
To the conclusion that there are most likely (almost certainly) multiple criminals. There are two episodes left in the season, and we’ve already been hinted that the criminal somehow managed to be in different places very quickly. Unfortunately, thanks to today’s episode, Howard has a more or less solid alibi, so we’ll try to develop our old guesses. If the fan theories from our editorial team might spoil the resolution for you, we’ll say goodbye here. And we invite curious listeners to join the discussion.
Part 4: Our Main Theory
“Only Murders in the Building” periodically seems to abandon its storylines on a dime, so our main guess involves returning to one of those lines—specifically, to the artist Rose Cooper, who painted Charles’s father, and her mysterious disappearance. We have also repeatedly noted the prevailing theme of fathers and children, so it would be logical if the creators precisely lead us there. Thus, our new prime suspect becomes… Leonara Folger (Shirley MacLaine).
Why? It fits both the world of the series and the logic of narrative methods—she dropped out of the list of suspects too early, she is connected to the unfolding events and the main theme of the second season of “Only Murders in the Building.” Plus (and this is pure speculation), we have no documentary evidence that she is truly who she claims to be. Could it be that the woman who introduced herself as Leonara is actually Rose Cooper, who is now taking revenge on everyone involved in the drama that happened many years ago and has therefore entered into a conspiracy with Detective Kreps? Or is Detective Kreps completely innocent, and the glitter ended up on his neck purely by chance?
