Part 1. Oliver and Company

So, let's start with the episode's theme, as per our good tradition. This week, the main narrator is Will (Ryan Broussard), the son of theater director and the most eccentric member of the main trio, Oliver Putnam (Martin Short).

Since the main theme of the new season of 'Only Murders in the Building' is gradually becoming family, the baton of exploring the 'fathers and children' theme is smoothly passed from Charles Savage (Steve Martin) to Oliver. And Putnam will rule the roost for the next half hour.

Actually, it's time for your host to confess – for about ten years (if not more), she has been an ardent fan of Martin Short and has watched a huge number of films and various projects with him. The fact that throughout the first season he was pushed into the background upset her, that is, me, a little. Therefore, his central position in the episode caused a storm of delight in me. Yes, and Samuel Farnsworth, who portrayed our hero in his youth, looks incredibly like him, don't you think?

Well, we'll briefly believe that Oliver really can read people perfectly in the local analogue of the Mafia game, and therefore we boldly trust where the writers are leading us.

Part 2. Unexpected Help

Initially, the investigation is pushed forward in today's episode by Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), who discovers a matchbook from a local cafe in the 'arcatacombs' leading to her apartment (yes, we really liked the word 'arcatacombs'). Her new friend Alice (Cara Delevingne) offers to use her apartment as a venue for an art party, and Mabel gladly agrees.

At the same time, Charles again visits his murderer ex-girlfriend Jan (Amy Ryan), who plays the role of a consultant à la Hannibal Lecter. And oh, how well she plays it! Her amazing mix of neuroticism and charisma is woven into the narrative so logically that we are easily ready to believe in the rekindling feelings of the frankly lonely Charles for the woman who tried to send him to the next world. They are a very funny couple, and we are delighted.

So, Jan suggests that we need to look for our criminal among creative people – and who recently got an artist girlfriend? That's right, Mabel. So the party in her apartment can be used.

Part 3. 'Only Murders in the Building' Play Mafia

So, we are now approaching the climax of the episode – a magnificently staged game of 'Son of Sam' (a reference to the real-life maniac David Berkowitz, who terrorized New York from '76 to '77). But first, let's delve a little more into their investigation, because in this episode it clearly took a back seat. And forgetting about it is not good.

Oliver witnesses a waiter from a local cafe awkwardly trying to return the very generous tip that Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell) gave him on the day of her death. Thus, Putnam finds out that perhaps one of Bunny's meetings with the killer was recorded by surveillance cameras. Moreover, in the video, Bunny's strange interlocutor, whose face we don't see, took a matchbook from the counter – exactly the same one Mabel recently found in the secret passage. The circle narrows a little (and we are still staring intently at Howard).

But first, we need to deal with Alice – Oliver takes on this task. And we see one of the best scenes of the second season – a masterfully staged game of 'Son of Sam' with a twist, which simply elevates the work of the costume designers and decorators to a new level. At some point, the game escalates into a real confrontation: we learn that Alice lied about her origins from a poor family to have a better chance of gaining popularity among the art scene. Since this is not related to the murder, the heroes have hit a dead end again, and have also fallen out.

However, Alice is clearly hiding more than she lets on, even though she is more of a distraction for the viewers.

Well, the last revelation of the episode – Will tells his father that, according to his DNA test, his ancestry should be Greek (not Irish like Oliver's). And which Greek did we have the pleasure of seeing recently? It seems Putnam has another unpleasant conversation ahead with Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane). Stock up on popcorn, an interesting next episode of 'Only Murders in the Building' awaits us!
