Jim Jarmusch is an American director, screenwriter, and musician. His name is primarily associated with anti-major, independent American cinema. Many of his films have repeatedly participated in various programs of the Cannes Film Festival, winning awards there several times in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.

It was the director's early films that became most important for cinephiles around the world. The films of the 80s defined and established Jarmusch's unique style and directorial signature. Disregard for color, deliberate sloppiness, and light dialogue of charismatic characters turned the independent filmmaker into an author understandable and accessible to a wide audience.

Jarmusch addressed themes close to ordinary people: escape for a dream ("Vacation Without End," "Stranger Than Paradise"), establishing communication with the outside world ("Coffee and Cigarettes"), the search for recognition and easy money ("Down by Law," "Night on Earth"), nostalgia for bygone stars ("Mystery Train"), and reflections on life and death ("Dead Man").

The roles in Jim Jarmusch's early films were played by then and future stars of American cinema. These include Chris Parker and Sara Driver ("Vacation Without End"), Eszter Balint and Richard Edson ("Stranger Than Paradise"), Roberto Benigni and Bill Murray ("Coffee and Cigarettes"), Tom Waits and Nicoletta Braschi ("Down by Law"), Masatoshi Nagase and Youki Kudoh ("Mystery Train"), Gena Rowlands and Winona Ryder ("Night on Earth"), as well as Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer ("Dead Man").

Jim Jarmusch's films have been recognized at various festivals (notably in Cannes). The film "Stranger Than Paradise," for example, received the Caméra d'Or award for best debut at the Cannes Festival. Both "Down by Law" and "Dead Man" were also shown in the main competition there. The film "Mystery Train" won an award for best artistic contribution at Cannes.
