Remembering and discussing what we saw in the fifth episode of the season of the series 'Dexter: New Blood'.
After several episodes of hints and half-truths, the creators of the series 'Dexter: New Blood' have finally spoken out loud. Now we not only know who the local serial killer is, but also what Dex will have to face in the foreseeable future. And it seems this time the consequences will be much more serious than at the start of the show.

A Party with Consequences
Having found a dangerous razor in his son's belongings, Dexter decides to have a serious talk with Harrison. He is confident that he can help him, as he himself has gone through similar things (from his mother's death before his eyes to the desire to shed blood). But the boy denies guilt, explaining the presence of the razor by saying that he previously had to defend himself a lot.
The inventiveness of Dexter and Harrison's quarrels is hardly enough to develop the drama. Each time they fall into the same script:
— You're my father, but you don't believe me.
— I'm your father, I know better.
Another scandal ends with Harrison leaving for a 'death party,' where he is considered a guest of honor. Classmates are sure that if it weren't for Dex's son, they could have actually died. At the party, Harrison gets drunk, takes drugs, and passes out from an overdose. But before that, he manages to tell Audrey, Angela's daughter, that his father's real name is not Jim Lindsay.
How a Good Father Behaves
Harrison miraculously survives. And Dexter is furious. From the local police officer, he learns the name of the drug dealer and wants to personally deliver justice. However, his plans are not meant to come true, because the police reach the dealer at the exact moment the protagonist wants to kidnap him for the traditional ritual. Instead, Dex decides to play the enraged father and simply beats the haughty kid. For this, he is taken to the station, albeit without consequences. Procedure is procedure. But this circumstance allows Jim to find out the address of the manufacturer of the synthetic drug that nearly killed his son. And here he cannot miss.
We are shown once again that Dexter, after years of 'downtime,' has clearly lost his edge. Yes, he manages to break into the 'villain's' house and even put him on the table. But he hesitates again. Finds himself right under the nose of the police again. To carry out justice, the hero kills the victim, but simulates an overdose.
The Main Villain is No Longer Hidden
We suspected this from the very beginning of the show 'Dexter: New Blood': the killer of the missing girls is the local philanthropist Kurt (father of Matt, killed by Dexter). In the previous episode, Clancy Brown's character invited a runaway girl to his place. And in this one, despite her attempts to escape (she tried to seduce the old man, thinking that was what he wanted), he shoots her. Although he is furious that the 'lost girl' didn't run away like the other victims.
What's even more interesting, Kurt turns his attention to Harrison. The boy, in a fit of emotion, decides to leave town but meets the old man who wants to treat him. Kurt tells Dexter's son about the difficult relationships between fathers and sons, and then offers him a job. The scheme is similar to that with the murdered 'lost girl.' Only previously Kurt did this only with girls. Is he changing the rules? Or does he know that Dexter killed Matt and wants to take revenge on him? We will find out very soon.
Powerful Cliffhanger and Meeting with an Old Friend
Angela, together with the podcaster played by Jamie Chung, goes to New York for a police conference, also wanting to verify that Matt is really there, as Kurt previously told her. Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.
This trip resulted in two key events:
- from the hotel video recordings, Angela saw that the person under the name Matt was some random guy (meaning Kurt is deliberately lying, which you and I have known for a long time);
- at the conference, she met Detective Batista (one of the main characters of the original series), who shared experience about investigations from seasons 2 and 3 of 'Dexter'.
Batista helped Angela strengthen her belief that the girls are not disappearing by chance. And he suggested that she could catch the criminal by understanding what the victims have in common.
A nice cameo, made not just to please fans of the original, but also to move the plot forward. During the conversation, Batista mentions the Trinity case and Harrison's name.
When Angela returns home, Audrey tells her about what happened at the party and Harrison's words about his father. These two circumstances push the police chief to internet research, which leads her to learn the real name of her beloved Jim — Dexter Morgan.
Now the main character definitely won't be able to wriggle out with the simplest methods. Perhaps he will have to find a new refuge and leave his beloved quiet and cozy life in Iron Lake.
