Traditionally, on the eve of All Saints' Day, we remember films like 'The Nightmare Before Christmas', 'Hocus Pocus', 'Halloween', and the like. Traditions must be honored and all that. But sometimes you want to cut loose, because Halloween is all about mischief and madness. So here is a selection of 10 comedy horror movies that will make you scared but laughing. Or vice versa.
The Final Girls (2014)
The slasher genre is unique in its own way. It consists entirely of clichés. But it also ironically plays on these clichés time and again. One of the most common slasher clichés (and horror in general, for that matter) is the presence of the so-called 'final girl', the heroine who outlives all the other characters and valiantly defeats the antagonist at the end of the film. And this stereotype was bound to get its share of mockery sooner or later.
At the center of the plot are friends who accidentally end up on the other side of a famous slasher film, in which the main character's mother played the lead role. But will the young people's knowledge of horror movie rules help them survive a real threat? That's what the film 'The Final Girls' answers, which, among other things, boasts a number of cool acting performances (Malin Akerman is magnificent here!).
The Love Witch (2016)
If you think modern horrors can't surprise you, check out this work by Anna Biller. In her film, she carefully adopts the aesthetic of bloody-erotic films from the 60s and presents a soft alternative to the style of Dario Argento. With crazy color grading, psychedelic episodes, and successful humor that breaks up all this bacchanalia.
As for the story, a young witch just wants to find the love of a real man and is ready to seduce any member of the opposite sex. However, not everyone can withstand the power of her love charms and natural charisma. The audience is unlikely to resist either.
The Babysitter (2017)
Our list of 10 comedy horror movies continues with the sensational hit by McG, which at the time soared to the top of various Netflix charts. And it's in this film that the star of Samara Weaving shone, for which we give a special thanks.
The plot follows a boy who falls in love with his babysitter, who turns out to be a member of a ritual cult that wants to sacrifice him to the devil. But if the description hints at formula and predictability, in reality, it's not. Screenwriter Brian Duffield (we, by the way, dedicated a separate article to him, ) managed to skillfully play on the numerous clichés of the genre and turn a classic survival story into a hilarious and thrilling spectacle.

A horror movie in the style of 'Groundhog Day'? I'll take two! Although the sequel 'Happy Death Day 2U' can hardly be called successful, that doesn't negate the fact that the original turned out to be quite punchy. A fresh take on a worn-out concept, meta-humor seeping from every corner, and a fast-paced narrative with a couple of juicy murders — the recipe for a 100% successful film that can be watched both on Halloween and at a random party with friends.
At the center of the plot is a college student who, on the eve of her birthday, is killed by a maniac in a mask with a baby face. But the next day, the girl wakes up and realizes that she is now in a time loop. Which means she will have to die more than once before she figures everything out.
Tragedy Girls (2017)
The era of the internet and social media has spawned many different horrors: cautionary and prophetic, creepy and creative. And there are comedy horror movies on the subject too. For example, the film 'Tragedy Girls' starring Alexandra Shipp and Brianna Hildebrand.
Schoolgirls run a blog about serial killers, but there aren't that many deaths in their town, so they have few subscribers. That's definitely not how you make history, which is what the girls dream of. This means they have to take matters into their own hands — catch a maniac, learn a couple of tricks from him, stage a death or two, and ride the wave of hype into the trending topics. And what could possibly go wrong?
Ready or Not (2019)
Children's games with a possible fatal outcome? No, this isn't about 'Squid Game', but about an unexpectedly witty horror movie with Samara Weaving. According to the film's plot, her character arrives at her fiancé's mansion, where trials await her that she must pass before being accepted into the family.
The creators of the film crossed a typical slasher with stories about mysterious mansions and seasoned it all with armor-piercing black humor. The result is a magnificent one-night attraction that will appeal to all fans of the genre and those who love unpredictable plot twists.
Little Monsters (2019)
A selection of comedy horror movies couldn't do without a zombie film. But mentioning 'Shaun of the Dead' again would be a faux pas, despite all the endless love for Edgar Wright's masterpiece. So for a change, you can watch 'Little Monsters', a less intellectual but equally vibrant and delightfully absurd movie about the living dead.
The film tells the story of a kindergarten teacher (played by Lupita Nyong'o) and her group of children on a field trip during which a zombie virus outbreak occurs. But the girl's resourcefulness knows no bounds: she explains everything happening around them as a game (hello 'Life is Beautiful'!). This idea gives rise to a series of comical situations in the story and an unforgettable spectacle, perfectly suited for the Halloween mood.
Freaky (2020)
We couldn't help but include in the list of 10 comedy horror movies another work by Christopher Landon, which, like 'Happy Death Day', ironically plays on one of the most popular plot devices — body swapping.
In his version, this happens to a schoolgirl who, by chance, swaps bodies with a serial killer. Even at the conceptual level, this sounds funny. Even funnier is how it was implemented. This is especially true for the role of Vince Vaughn, who cheerfully portrays a young girl trapped in the body of a 50-year-old maniac.
Vicious Fun (2021)
Little noticed this year was the film by the hope of Canadian horror Cody Calahan, 'Vicious Fun'. Meanwhile, it's a cool homage to 80s horror movies (garish blood, neon, and over-the-top acting included) and at the same time a good-natured but witty ironic take on the VHS era.
According to the plot, film critic Joel accidentally ends up at a closed meeting of psychopaths and serial killers. But the guy has watched dozens of horror movies, so even experienced maniacs won't take him down so easily.
Trick 'r Treat (2007)
And concludes our list of 10 comedy horror movies is the work of Michael Dougherty (screenwriter of 'X-Men'), dedicated directly to Halloween. In it, the author, in an anthology format, examines well-known holiday tales.
Four stories take place here on the eve of All Saints' Day. Sometimes they even intersect, and they are united by the faceless Sam. This creature makes sure that Halloween traditions are not broken. And anyone who opposes will pay with their life!
