‘Lucifer’ is retiring, so it’s time to choose series to replace it.

The final season of the long-suffering show ‘Lucifer’ has been released on Netflix, a show that fans saved from cancellation twice. Such a devoted fan base is hard to find. But one way or another, even they now have to say goodbye to their beloved characters. However, this is no reason to be sad, but an opportunity to discover new shows, and we’re here to help with that today.

American Gods (2017-2021)

If you didn’t know, Lucifer himself and a number of other characters in the show originate from the comic book series ‘The Sandman’ by Neil Gaiman. It was there that the Lord of Hell went to Earth and opened his nightclub, which served as the starting point for the series.

From the same pen of Gaiman came an equally iconic work — the book ‘American Gods’, which became the basis for the eponymous show on Starz. What unites the two series is not only the name of the author of the literary sources and the involvement of representatives of the divine pantheon in the plot, but also a complex production history. While ‘Lucifer’ was constantly on the verge of cancellation, ‘American Gods’ regularly changed showrunners and cast members. Nevertheless, this project is very intriguing for its atmosphere and incredibly colorful characters.

Evil (2019 – present)

‘Lucifer’ is a typical procedural. One episode, one investigation, and a flimsy overarching plot. The series ‘Evil’ follows roughly the same structure, where the detective element is mixed with religious undertones. Fans of the Netflix project will also enjoy the interaction between the central characters with different viewpoints. In this case, one of them is a person of faith, while the other holds scientific views. Despite many similar elements, the charisma of Tom Ellis is sorely lacking in the actors here. But it’s still worth giving this multi-episode series a try.

Good Omens (2019 – present)

And again Gaiman. And again representatives of heaven and hell. And again a story that has room for humor (even biting at times), despite the scale of the story involving questions of the fate of the human world.

As in ‘Lucifer’, the main driving force in ‘Good Omens’ is the characters and the actors who portray them. The duo of Michael Sheen as the angel Aziraphale and David Tennant as the demon Crowley is the best thing the series offers. Sometimes it even seems that it doesn’t matter what’s happening in the plot (meanwhile, it’s about how a demon and an angel unite to prevent the coming of the Antichrist). And the dialogues between these two alone bring immense pleasure. Apparently, this idea later gave birth to another equally successful series — ‘Staged’.

Californication (2007-2014)

The initiator of ‘Lucifer’ was Tom Kapinos, the creator of one of the most striking projects of the late 2000s, the series ‘Californication’ about a successful writer and his ambiguous lifestyle. From there, the story of the seductive fallen angel inherited the charisma of the central figure, the ease with which the hero gets out of awkward situations, the irreverent humor, and even some family motifs. ‘Lucifer’, of course, didn’t reach the cult status of the project with David Duchovny, but finding parallels between them is a rather engaging activity. So if you missed it, now is the time to catch up.
