On August 26, “The Green Knight,” a new directorial work by David Lowery that will leave no one indifferent, hits theaters.

In any era, the question of self-determination is very important. Both now and in the Middle Ages (even the mythical one). But if you are the nephew of King Arthur, your choices are limited — everyone expects a feat worthy of a knight from you. This is what the fantasy film “The Green Knight” is dedicated to.

The main character, Gawain (Dev Patel), sets off to meet the Green Knight. A meeting that promises him death. Along the way, he encounters various creatures, big and small. It is not always possible to understand what a particular encounter means, but they all come together in one big journey. Remove one detail from it — and the whole picture will be disrupted.

“The Green Knight” is more about metaphysics than obvious things. There are many questions about David Lowery’s plot that the author does not answer. Instead, the film is filled with meanings and alliterations. Sometimes excessively. Some may like it, others may not.

But one thing no one will argue with — the film is incredibly beautiful. Medieval fantasy on screen is no longer surprising, just take “Game of Thrones” or “The Witcher.” But how visually rich the world is here — words cannot describe it. The aesthetics, color grading, play with light and shadow. Every frame begs to be a screensaver.

“The Green Knight” can be perceived as a beautiful, meditative parable. Or you can dig deep and search for meanings, interpret them in your own way. But the film will leave few people indifferent.
