Sex, cocaine, and Ewan McGregor as Halston — in short about the new (another) mini-series from Ryan Murphy on Netflix.

A biopic about fashion designer Roy Halston, one of the founders of a unique American style, has been released on Netflix. It would seem that producer Ryan Murphy and the cast led by Ewan McGregor should have ensured high ratings, but that was not the case. Murphy has long been making monotonous and boring series, in essence, with a single idea — to show the oppressed and rejected by the world. His style is recognizable — he definitely knows how to film, the picture is pleasing to the eye. But something urgently needs to be done with the characters and plot. We figure out why the series 'Halston' will be remembered by few.

Halston

First, let's examine the main problem of the project. The series positioned itself as a story about an interesting fashion designer with real-life stories. In the end, it turned out too fictional. We are immersed in the atmosphere of the late 60s, when American girls are introduced to what high fashion is. Halston could rethink many wardrobe items and did so out of his own interest and the opportunity to liberate girls and men. But the series won't show you that.

The series shows McGregor's hero constantly drunk and stoned, becoming the leader of all non-standard or society-rejected people. He is absolutely confident in his talent, but bureaucracy and big money in the fashion world stop him. In the end, all his extravagance only prevents sponsors from keeping his business afloat.

Halston review

It's gratifying that they show us a lot of outfits and outbursts of anger from the main character. Emotions are the main driver of the plot here, and perhaps without Ewan McGregor's acting they would not have carried it at all. The story was stretched over 5 episodes, although one movie would have sufficed. During this time, we manage to get acquainted with several significant figures in the designer's biography, for example, Liza Minnelli or the future designer of Tiffany jewelry.

All the ups and downs of the designer are tied to money. And the whole business side of the issue looks even interesting. Because we see how the hero decides to open his own store and atelier, and what he has to do to achieve his goal. Later, Halston's business turns into something bigger, and this is a good example of how creative efforts help you achieve your goals.

The designer is not bothered by investors or profitability, he only cares about creativity and beauty. Profit or loss reports are not as important to him as draping in luxurious fabric.

There was also no avoiding childhood trauma, the theme of the genius's constant loneliness.

Ewan McGregor

The series over five episodes superficially skims through the life of a man who really revolutionized the world of fashion. But we don't see it and don't understand it unless we turn to 'Wikipedia'. Although for some viewers, the bright picture, glitter, and McGregor's flamboyant gay character will be enough.

Colorful, sensual, and very sad. As they say, there's never too much Ewan. Therefore, I recommend this series to all fans. But if you don't want to spend your time on something not very engaging, then feel free to pass it by.
