On April 22, “Wrath of Man” hits the screens, a new film by the beloved Guy Ritchie. The British hooligan decided to treat us once again. Did he succeed, or did Disney suck the soul out of him, leaving only a good craftsman?

Briefly about the plot

I wouldn’t want to delve too deeply into the plot details, because we strongly recommend knowing as little as possible about the film before watching.

We are presented with H, a mysterious brutal character who, for unknown reasons, decides to get a job at a company providing cash-in-transit services. As time goes on, those around him increasingly ask the same question: is H who he seems, and what motives truly drive him?

First, about the undeniable pluses

Guy Ritchie is still a wonderful director. I would say one of the best working on action scenes. Throughout “Wrath” there were at least two scenes during which you forget you’re in a movie theater. They are staged so correctly, with such taste, that you can’t look away.

Ritchie knows where to make the camera static, where dynamic, where to show nothing at all and only hint, then reveal in more detail. The first third of “Wrath” is magnificent and flows smoothly, while also boasting excellent humor.

Special mention goes to the wonderful work of the composer, who manages to set the right tone for what’s happening on screen with minimal effort. Christopher Benstead, my respects.

The cast of “Wrath”

Where this film shines is in the number of professionals per square meter. While the entire ensemble cast was top-notch, the excellent work of Josh Hartnett and Holt McCallany cannot be overlooked. These guys know their craft and can evoke a whole range of emotions, for which they deserve praise.

The cameo by Post Malone made me smile.

Jason Statham in “Wrath”

I wanted to save the analysis of Jason Statham’s work in “Wrath” for dessert, but perhaps it fits best right here.

Jason has found his niche and feels quite comfortable in it. On one hand, you can’t call his role bad. The guy can act. On the other hand, if you’ve seen “The Transporter,” “The Mechanic,” “The Expendables,” or practically any of his roles, you won’t see anything new or unusual. Again, a tough, invincible professional with a backstory.

Now about the problems

First, the film isn’t exactly original. More precisely, it’s very standard. Somewhere in the second third, Ritchie reveals all his cards to the viewer and explains where and how the pieces are placed on the board, as if worried the viewer will get confused and not understand anything. So in the last third, you just follow the beautiful and, alas, predictable picture on the screen without engaging in thought.

Second, the film suffers a bit from time jumps. Starting the film when Ritchie decided to start it was the right decision, as was revealing the backstory, but the constant on-screen captions like “A few moments later” were slightly annoying. It seems the film would have benefited without them, because the viewer could have figured out the time periods on their own, and with the particular emphasis, the constant jumps were too noticeable.

A bit about expectations from the film

So when people saw just one very angry Jason Statham on the poster for “Wrath,” they couldn’t help but ask: what exactly awaits us? It doesn’t look much like the rowdy crime comedies with a huge ensemble that Ritchie has become so adept at churning out. Some were reminded of “Revolver,” others still can’t shake off the Vietnam flashbacks to the master’s previous work under Disney’s wing.

So what came of it?

What came of it is a solid action movie with Statham. Just like that. There are no intricate twists, no behind-the-scenes intrigues, no particular originality. There’s just a solid action movie with Statham (which in itself has become a special genre in recent years).

Advice

If you’re planning to go to the movies and love solid action films, “Wrath of Man” will suit you perfectly. Just don’t raise your expectations too high and don’t try to imagine in advance what you want this film to be. Just grab some popcorn, lean back in your seat, and enjoy.
