“A Teacher” is a series in which Kate Mara plays a sexual abuser, without realizing it herself.

At the end of 2020, a modest series from Hulu under the unassuming title “A Teacher” hit the small screens, which turned out to be a solid drama about destructive relationships and gender stereotypes. The lead roles in this project were played by Kate Mara (“127 Hours,” “House of Cards”) and Nick Robinson (“Love, Simon”). And it is the chemistry between the two actors that forms the foundation of an interesting multi-episode story on a controversial topic, worthy of viewers’ attention.

Passion? Love? Escape from Reality?

High school teacher Claire (Kate Mara) does not reject the unambiguous signs of attention from her student named Eric (Nick Robinson). She not only gives him extra lessons after school but also allows the young man much more than a teacher can permit.

The rather stereotypical premise of a story about a relationship between a teacher and their student was flipped by the show’s creators, led by Hannah Fidell, on whose film the series “A Teacher” is based. And this decision fundamentally changes the perception of an age-old plot. Despite all the global changes in society, we still live in a world of gender stereotypes, so we can easily imagine an adult male teacher harassing a young and attractive female student, but when the victim is not a girl but a boy, the story instantly becomes less clear-cut.

In the series “A Teacher,” the stage of acquaintance and the beginning of the relationship between Claire and Eric is deliberately romanticized to show how attraction between people can serve as an escape from reality for one and an introduction to the concept of love for the other. Moreover, this decision significantly enhances the impact of the story’s ending, which acts as a cold shower even for the most romantically inclined viewers.

The Connection Between the Actors Serves as the Foundation of the Series’ Success

A subtle psychological subtext, the acute topic of abuse, and interesting authorial moves are the most important components of the series “A Teacher,” but it is the chemistry between the actors that brings the story to life.

Nick Robinson manages to simultaneously display the self-confidence of a football team captain and the shyness of a still-immature man.

Kate Mara radiates sexuality and easily conveys the inner turmoil of a person whose life is not in order.

The significant age difference between the actors (Robinson is 25, Mara is 37) adds realism to what is happening on screen, making it much easier to believe in the connection between their characters.

Throughout the plot, the viewer is given the opportunity to make their own verdict on what has happened. The creators themselves give an unambiguous assessment of the entire situation, but skillfully balance between imposing an opinion on what is good and what is bad, and telling a story where the world is not divided into black and white.

As a result, “A Teacher” is an engaging series in which heavy themes of psychological violence are hidden behind a romantic facade, exploring not the nature of abuse but its consequences for life, and discussing how one wrong action can lead to personal catastrophe.
