Does nature rest on the children of major filmmakers? Here is a list of successful (and not so successful) examples of star children-directors who, in one way or another, left their mark on cinema.

Sofia Coppola (daughter of Francis Ford Coppola)

Who doesn't know the good old Francis Ford Coppola? Once, during the filming of The Godfather, he said something along the lines of "We need a newborn baby for the script – and I have my own newborn baby in my arms. Logical? Logical!" – and so Sofia began her journey through the harsh world of cinema from the earliest possible age. Subsequently, his father's willingness to cast his daughter in his films would play a cruel trick on both of them – everyone and their mother criticized her acting work in "The Godfather Part III".

Things were so bad that Sofia distanced herself from the film set for a long time and gravitated towards the design side of the runway. But you can't go against nature – the feeling of unfinished business and the huge number of relatives who had succeeded in cinema prevailed. Thanks to such acclaimed films as "The Virgin Suicides", "Lost in Translation" and "Marie Antoinette", Sofia became one of the most successful female directors in Hollywood.

Roman Coppola (son of Francis Ford Coppola)

Let's cheat a little and immediately remember Roman as well, since we're talking about the amazing Coppola family. Roman proved that the work of a second unit director is also important, because it's unknown whether the films "Dracula", "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" and "The Darjeeling Limited" would have turned out the way we love them. And let's not forget the music videos – after all, Roman managed to work with Green Day, Daft Punk, Arctic Monkeys and Kylie Minogue.

Fyodor Bondarchuk (son of Sergei Bondarchuk)

The fact that Fyodor Sergeevich ended up at the directing department of VGIK can be considered an interesting twist of fate – when applying to MGIMO, he made 37 mistakes in his entrance essay, which reduced his chances to zero. His father sighed and brought him to VGIK almost by the hand. Later, under the influence of his comrades Tigran Keosayan and Ivan Okhlobystin, Fyodor began to appear in films, then took up directing music videos. And from there it was a short step to actual directing. By the way, in his films (the same "Inhabited Island" and "Attraction"), no matter how you feel about them, you can see the hand of a good music video director, don't you think? Besides, his producer's instinct is also interesting – take, for example, the recent film "Sputnik".

Rob Reiner (son of Carl Reiner)

You must love at least one film by Rob Reiner. The touching and down-to-earth romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally", the nostalgic drama about friendship "Stand By Me", the tough legal drama "A Few Good Men" or the atmospheric thriller "Misery" – behind each of these projects is the steady hand of a talented director. However, few people know that Carl Reiner, Rob's father, practically introduced us all to the wonderful comedian Steve Martin by directing several films starring him.

Jason Reitman (son of Ivan Reitman)

We can't even imagine what it's like to grow up knowing that your father directed the culturally iconic "Ghostbusters". According to Jason, in high school he was a shy cinephile, and a few years later he started working as his dad's assistant on set, which gave him an invaluable opportunity to learn about the behind-the-scenes work of filmmakers. And what did we, the audience, get in return as a result of this process? Just the series "The Office" (where Jason was one of several directors) and the excellent films "Juno" and "Thank You for Smoking". By the way, in 2021, in theory, we are expecting a sequel to "Ghostbusters", which Jason will be working on – I wonder if he can pull it off?

Nick Cassavetes (son of John Cassavetes)

John Cassavetes is often called one of the brightest representatives of independent American cinema. Because of such proximity to the film set, his son Nicholas from a very early age felt a rejection of the profession, so strong that he decided to go down a completely different path and entered Syracuse University on a basketball scholarship. However, a serious injury put an end to his basketball career and forced him to reconsider his life plans. And that's good, now we can enjoy the specific "Alpha Dog" and the romantic "The Notebook", so we are the ones who benefit.

Luke Scott (son of Ridley Scott)

I hope we don't need to explain who Ridley Scott is and what he is famous for? Great. Thus, in our list appears the second son of the famous director, who threw himself headlong into second unit directing work on the sets of his star parent's films – that was Luke's role on the sets of "Exodus: Gods and Kings" and "The Martian". But Luke also carved out his own small and rather amusing niche – he has several short films under his belt that preceded the big films "Prometheus", "Alien: Covenant" and "Blade Runner 2049" as part of advertising campaigns.

Max Landis (son of John Landis)

Sometimes the status of the son of a big and famous director, especially one who gave us the outstanding "Trading Places", "Coming to America" and "The Blues Brothers", allows you to get away with things for quite a long time. Especially when you yourself show great promise – Max managed to write the script for "American Ultra" and direct the warmly received "Me Him Her" and "The Death and Return of Superman". But a bad character, a reputation as not the most pleasant person to deal with, and several allegations of violence put a cross on Landis Jr.'s immediate career. And yet this year sees the release of "Shadow in the Cloud", to whose original script Landis contributed.

Goro Miyazaki (son of Hayao Miyazaki)

It's hard to say unequivocally whether Goro Miyazaki was lucky or not. On the one hand, he had the resources and the opportunity to realize himself when Studio Ghibli invited him to help with storyboarding, and then with directing "Tales from Earthsea". On the other hand, he bears the surname of one of the most brilliant animators in the world, who, moreover, is quite straightforward in saying what he thinks. In the middle of the premiere, Hayao got up from his seat and left the hall to smoke, muttering "He is my child. But not yet an adult." Ahead of Goro were "From Up on Poppy Hill" and "Ronja, the Robber's Daughter", and in 2020 we were promised a project called "Earwig and the Witch".

Brandon Cronenberg (son of David Cronenberg)

As in previous cases, Brandon grew up in a film environment and has already tried his hand in the director's chair. His debut "Antiviral" was controversial and kept Brandon away from feature films for a long time. However, right now audiences can evaluate the film "Possessor" in theaters and decide for themselves where the apple fell in his case. Critics are currently saying it didn't fall far from the tree.
