In Fabric (2018)

In Fabric

Director Peter Strickland in 2018 caught the nostalgic wave of 1960s cinema and offered an unconventional horror that impresses with its style, unusual plot delivery, and chilling scenes that get under your skin.

The main character of the film buys an elegant red dress, which turns out to be far more sinister than one could imagine. Strickland, taking the style of 1960s horror exploitation as a base, told a simple story that hypnotizes, amuses, shocks, and truly frightens.

And the scenes with the store 'barkers' will stay with you for a very long time after watching...

The Witch (The VVitch: A New-England Folktale, 2015)

The Witch

In 2015, the then-unknown director Robert Eggers presented his debut feature film 'The Witch' to the audience, which instantly became a festival hit and an instant classic of the genre.

At the center of the story is a 17th-century Puritan family who decides to live on a secluded farm far from the rest of civilization. Soon, the youngest of the five children disappears, leading to real madness within the family. Of course, supernatural intervention is involved.

The grim narrative and languid atmosphere, the impressive performance of young Anya Taylor-Joy, and the skillfully placed horror episodes all made the film one of the best in 2015. Later, Eggers cemented his status as one of the most ambitious new directors in Hollywood with the release of 'The Lighthouse', which was also produced by A24.

It Comes at Night (2017)

It Comes at Night

Trey Edward Shults, who had already made a name for himself with the release of 'Krisha', solidified his success with the strong horror film 'It Comes at Night', which is sometimes classified as post-horror (a term coined by journalist Steve Rose).

In the plot, a family takes refuge in a random house from some infected (read: zombies). Boarded-up doors and windows, a mysterious danger lurking nearby, and other factors contribute to a growing sense of claustrophobia and paranoia.

The most interesting thing is that Shults plays with horror without resorting to external effects. All the scariest things happen within the family (and other inhabitants of the house), and the suspense is heightened, among other things, by not knowing where to expect that 'something'.

Hereditary (2018)

Hereditary A24

In 2018, A24 released perhaps its best horror film to date. We are talking about the undeniable hit by Ari Aster titled 'Hereditary'.

This film about existential horror within family relationships amazingly combines various elements and directions within the horror genre: slasher, haunted house, mystical underpinnings, bloody thriller, and much more.

All this helped Ari Aster literally pull the viewer out of their comfort zone and provide them with emotions not found in other genre films.

Midsommar (2019)

Midsommar

Ari Aster, like Robert Eggers, also released his second film with the support of A24 and managed to confirm all the advances given by audiences and critics. The bright and original slow-burner 'Midsommar' became one of the most memorable events in the film world in recent years.

The story of a group of young people who go to get acquainted with a pagan commune somewhere in Sweden divided viewers into two camps: ardent fans, viewers who look for new meanings in the film, are amazed by Aster's attention to detail, and praise the film for its frightening atmosphere in broad daylight, and those who were left furious by what they saw. 'Midsommar' left no one indifferent.

A24's filmography includes many more great films that can be classified as horror — such as 'Green Room' and 'Under the Skin' — so we invite you to share your own top horror films from this worthy company in the comments.
