There is an opinion that on Halloween you should only watch horror movies. In fact, there are plenty of great films that capture the spirit of the most colorful holiday of the year, telling stories about witches, magic, and all sorts of supernatural stuff without obvious attempts to scare the viewer. These are the films we'll be talking about in our next top list.

The Craft (1996)

Of course, the modest 1996 film that has since become a cult classic does have some moments that might scare an unprepared viewer, but the emphasis in Andrew Fleming's film is not on that.

"The Craft" is about 4 young girls, each of whom considers herself an outcast at school. To improve their lives, they resort to... occultism! The obvious moral follows: be careful what you wish for, and abusing power leads to no good. But watching it is damn fascinating, and the music, which later became the main theme of the series "Charmed," is a bonus to the film starring Neve Campbell.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

If you don't know what Halloween is and are afraid to watch horror movies on the subject, you won't find a better option than "Hocus Pocus"!

At the center of the story are witch sisters awakened from a centuries-old curse by the efforts of a hapless teenager. The plot develops in the spirit of a rom-com and coming-of-age story, but with a touch of magic and the wonderful sisters played by the brilliant Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker. This film will enchant you, and don't say we didn't warn you!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

The eccentric musical by Jim Sharman turned 45 in 2020, isn't that a reason to rewatch the film on Halloween?!

A young engaged couple accidentally ends up in a mysterious old castle belonging to the eccentric Dr. Frank-N-Furter. In this place, everything that is unacceptable in traditional society is allowed, and the surprises awaiting you are countless.

Death Becomes Her (1992)

The popular comedy by Robert Zemeckis is rightfully considered a classic of entertainment cinema. Here, the brilliant acting trio of Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis play out a familiar story of fighting for love, but in a very unexpected way.

The elixir of eternal youth can turn out to be an extremely contradictory thing. Streep and Hawn's heroines learn this the hard way as they try to win the affection of Bruce Willis's character, who, by the way, delivers a brilliant comedic performance.

No hint of a slasher or scary jump-scare scenes, just killer black humor and a supernatural element in the narrative — the perfect recipe for a Halloween movie!

The Witches (1990)

The classic fairy tale by Roald Dahl took on new colors in the film adaptation by Nicolas Roeg with a brilliant performance by Anjelica Huston (even despite the ugly makeup as the Grand High Witch).

A grandmother tells her grandson scary stories about witches, but she doesn't suspect that soon the boy will have to face them face to face. The sinister possessors of supernatural powers plan to turn all the children of England into mice!

This quirky film, based on a children's tale, might scare only the youngest viewers. For everyone else, "The Witches" is an amazing and captivating story in very atmospheric and dark settings.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Despite the fact that the film is not by Tim Burton (he's only the screenwriter here) but by Henry Selick, and it's about another beloved holiday, it's best to watch "The Nightmare Before Christmas" on Halloween. It fully captures the spirit of All Saints' Day, the events take place in Halloween Town, and the characters are perfect for cosplay at themed parties.

Why not kidnap Santa Claus and take his place? That's exactly what Jack Skellington thought, but the consequences turned out to be not at all what he expected.

Stop-motion animation combined with high-quality special effects and the absolutely magical music of Danny Elfman can immerse you in the Halloween atmosphere and introduce you to the most eccentric and unexpected characters you won't forget anytime soon.

Terry Pratchett's Hogfather (2006)

Terry Pratchett and his Discworld are the best way to transport from our world to a world full of magic and amazing characters. As with "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the events in "Hogfather" revolve around another holiday, but in everything that happens, you involuntarily feel the Halloween vibe. And how could it be otherwise, when one of the main characters is Death himself (yes, yes, male)?!

On the eve of Hogswatch, the main holiday of the Discworld, strange things are happening in the main city of the continent, Ankh-Morpork. The Hogfather himself has disappeared, without whom the magical day simply cannot take place. To restore the world to its usual order, Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully, governess Susan Sto Helit (played by the charming Michelle Dockery), and her grandfather Death step up.

Colorful characters and Pratchett's signature humor are the main components of this dark fairy tale, which can and should be watched on Halloween.
