Not everyone will like the new image of Sherlock, but 'Enola Holmes' compensates for this with many other merits.

Netflix continues to delight movie fans in this difficult year with a variety of films starring top-tier celebrities. At the end of September, this trend was supported by the film Enola Holmes starring Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham Carter. Moreover, the film can boast not only a star-studded cast. But let's take it one step at a time.

Sherlock's Sister

In the new Netflix project, the story revolves around the sister of the famous English detective Sherlock Holmes, named Enola (Millie Bobby Brown). Unlike her brothers, the young girl continues to live with her mother (Helena Bonham Carter), who is responsible for raising the inquisitive young lady.

One fine day, Bonham Carter's character disappears, and Enola herself tries to find out where her mother could have gone. At the same time, her older brother Mycroft (Sam Claflin) tries to send the girl away to be raised, seeing in her an overly rebellious spirit. But the search for her mother turns out to be just the tip of the iceberg for Enola, as she becomes embroiled in a much more tangled story.

Speaking about the plot of the film 'Enola Holmes', it is worth paying tribute to the literary source material, authored by American writer Nancy Springer. Yes, if anyone thought that Enola and her adventures were the product of the imagination of Sherlock's 'father' Arthur Conan Doyle himself, we hasten to disappoint you.

The film's script turned out to be quite lively, varied, and not too predictable. Given the film's obvious teenage orientation, this can be considered a significant plus.

Spirit of Adventure

It's quite difficult to talk about the plot without unnecessary spoilers, and there's no need to, but we can confidently and openly discuss the atmosphere of the film 'Enola Holmes'.

Despite the somewhat inflated runtime, the film has many dynamic episodes, underscored by appropriate editing. Locations change one after another, you just have to keep up. The main character repeatedly breaks the fourth wall, telling viewers about her attitude towards what is happening. All this, combined with a decent detective subplot, helps to feel that very adventurous spirit, which can be considered the main advantage of the film directed by Harry Bradbeer.

Not an Asocial Sherlock

A small scandal erupted around the film, as Conan Doyle's descendants complained about the project, noting distortions in the image of Sherlock Holmes. They claimed he became more emotional and attached, which does not correspond to their ancestor's vision.

And indeed, in Bradbeer's film, Sherlock, played by Henry Cavill, has become softer and more sensitive compared to other incarnations of the iconic character. But, honestly, the scandal is much ado about nothing. Firstly, 'Enola Holmes' is not an adaptation of Conan Doyle. Secondly, Sherlock is a secondary character in the film, playing far from the most crucial role in the narrative. Therefore, such changes are not too noticeable and do not really affect the perception of the story.

Is the film 'Enola Holmes' worth watching?

If you like teenage films with a spirit of adventure and a detective foundation, you will enjoy this work. If you are not annoyed by Millie Bobby Brown's obvious overacting and the 'tactless' exploitation of the image of Sherlock Holmes, this film will likely appeal to you. If you expect something more from the film 'Enola Holmes', it's better not to waste your time on it.
