'Palm Springs' is another benefit for Andy Samberg and just a good movie with a time loop.

The pandemic period forced many studios to release their films directly online. One such new release is the film 'Palm Springs', which debuted on Hulu on July 10.

Debut director Max Barbakow decided to play 'Groundhog Day' in his first feature film, placing the characters (yes, he's not the only special one here) in a time loop. And he did it quite well. But let's take it step by step.

Endless Wedding

The main character named Nyles (Andy Samberg) has sex with a girl he doesn't love in the morning, lounges by someone else's pool in the afternoon, and parties at his friends' wedding in the evening. And this repeats day after day because Nyles is stuck in a time loop. Due to a twist of fate, the bride's sister Sarah (Cristin Milioti) also gets caught in this anomaly. The heroes must either fight the paradox or accept it, spending their time in the most carefree way possible.

The theme of an endlessly repeating day has already been played out in various ways, from the classic moral tale in the cult comedy with Bill Murray to the funny and witty horror 'Happy Death Day'. Saying something new within this already distinct genre is quite difficult, and frankly unnecessary. The main thing here is not so much the message itself, but its packaging. And 'Palm Springs' has that in perfect order.

Funny, Charming, and Not Stupid

The success of any time-loop story lies in interesting characters. As it happens, everything Andy Samberg does turns out funny. He was great in TV sketches, stormed into the music business spawning a bunch of followers (including the wonderful band 'The Lonely Island'), directly contributed to creating one of the most witty sitcoms of our time, and settled nicely into film. And even though in this film we see the same charming slacker, it still works.

It's even more interesting that Samberg isn't the only asset Barbakow's work relies on. Cristin Milioti, known for roles in 'Black Mirror' and 'How I Met Your Mother', makes a perfectly harmonious, albeit eccentric, pair with him. She adds charm to the story and, frankly, a female perspective on wild partying, making the film more universal.

In the dialogues between the characters, the theme of loneliness among millennials is revealed, who try to hide behind sarcasm and endless parties, not showing their pain to others. Even though the film doesn't abound in dramatic notes and tries to entertain the viewer, it can't be called stupid. And that's another plus for the project.

Should You Watch 'Palm Springs'?

'Palm Springs' can't be called a hilarious film; you probably won't even remember any joke or quote from it, but during the process you won't even think about it. The Samberg-Milioti duo, another epic appearance on screen by the brilliant J.K. Simmons, and charming fooling around will surely resonate with many viewers.
