Remembering and discussing what we saw in the ninth episode of 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels'.
In the penultimate episode of the debut season of 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels', a touching (albeit awkward) reunion of the Vega family took place, and Magda's (Natalie Dormer) plans seem to be facing insurmountable obstacles in the next episode. What else did we learn from what we saw? Let's figure it out together.

Direct Confrontations
After a skirmish with unknown attackers, Lewis and Tiago conclude that it was likely the work of German Nazis. The experienced detective, worried for his Mexican partner, gives him a chance to rest, while he himself goes to meet the danger in the person of the architect Goss.
From a conversation with a follower of the Führer, the American Jew learns that the Nazis know the whereabouts of his children. But Lewis, initially combative and even threatening the Nazi, warns his interlocutor that they should fear 'not lions, but cockroaches.'
In Episode 9, Councilman Townsend also meets with a dangerous man who is unpleasant to him, namely his own father. He asks for his help with the freeway matter, but is once again humiliated. It seems that in the series, everyone who is not lazy has mocked Townsend.
Let's return, however, to Lewis. After an interesting conversation with Goss, he again goes to the boss of the Jewish mafia, hoping to secure his support. He agrees on the terms of 'eternal friendship,' obviously implying further patronage of illegal activities by a law enforcement representative.
Lewis's first request is to protect the young genius whom Goss and his comrades are trying to get their hands on. It must be said that this decision turns out to be justified, because at that very moment the boy was supposed to be killed by Townsend's professional seducer and Gestapo agent Kurt.
Family Reunion
The central and key scene of Episode 9 of 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' was the scene in the nightclub. First, Maria went there with her son Raul, then Josefina, followed by Mateo, Rico, and Rio, and finally Tiago and Molly also arrived after a romantic walk on the beach.
This moment became important because all the cards were revealed for all members of the Vega family:
- Everyone learned that Tiago is dating Molly and truly loves her (the detective's passionate speech strangely calms all the relatives at once);
- Everyone accepted that Mateo has chosen the path of a pachuco;
- Everyone agreed that Josefina has the right to her own opinion about her life and religion under Molly's wing.
Magda, in the guise of Rio, watches all this closely, seeing how all her plans are falling apart and the Vega family is restoring its shaken family ties. Furthermore, the freeway that set the Mexicans against the government apparently will not be built, and Dr. Craft still does not want to turn into Dr. Krupp.
So far, everything points to Magda having to take some truly desperate steps to achieve what she wants (what exactly she wants, we still don't fully understand). The public murder of Diego, committed by the police at the end of the episode, could serve as an aid in creating chaos in the city for her.
One way or another, next week we will see Santa Muerte in action and get all the answers we are interested in, as viewers are awaiting the tenth and final episode of the season.
