Deaths in the series 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' are increasing, the creators continue to escalate the atmosphere and neglect the development of secondary storylines, while the characters engage in all sorts of nonsense. So, what did we see in the new episode of the show?

True Face

At the end of the last episode, Mateo finally carried out a vendetta against the police officer Riley, the main racist of the story, which, of course, stirred up the entire city (as the main character Tiago later puts it: 'The city is ready to explode'). His detective brother conveniently misses this moment because the embraces of the beautiful sister Molly are far more interesting to him than what's happening in the family and at work.

Magda in the guise of Rio praises Mateo for his bold act and says it's time to show his true face and remember his roots (we seem to have heard this a couple of episodes ago). She reflects that there is black and white and one should not forget about it. The girl reinforces her words with passionate sex, during which Rico joins them, because why not.

Detective Affairs

Lewis and Tiago remembered by the fifth episode that they work as detectives. No, of course, they didn't start investigating the Hazlett case, because the brutal murder of a 'colleague' takes priority. First, Lewis makes sure that his partner didn't kill the cop (well, he's convinced, he took his word for it, Mexicans don't lie, everyone knows that), and then they go together to question potential witnesses to the crime. Quite quickly, they learn that Rico and his associates are involved. Also quickly, Tiago begins to suspect that his brother Mateo was involved as well.

Penny Dreadful

Tiago Vega tries to confirm his suspicions through conversations with Raul (that's the older brother, in case you forgot), while sending Lewis to talk to his mother. The woman tells the police officer how important it is to communicate with Santa Muerte, and he in response praises her son. Maria, as usual, speaks in vague speeches. This time, she suddenly asks Lewis to protect Tiago in a context understandable only to her.

Penny Dreadful

Setting off in search of Rico, the detectives again resorted to the most effective detective method—interviewing acquaintances. In one such conversation, Tiago literally turns into a monster, threatening a Mexican woman with deportation and separation from her daughter. This frightens Lewis, who doesn't hesitate to tell his partner about it.

Next comes a scene with a literal gangster-style raid by two 'professional' detectives on the hideout of Rico and Co. As a result of these actions, Lewis manages to catch one of the pachuco's henchmen, and Tiago personally confirms that Mateo killed the cop, but this time he doesn't shoot his brother, instead letting him go. Consistency is key!

What About the Nazis

The most coherent storyline of the series 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' was not given any interesting development in this episode. There were only three more or less intriguing episodes:

Lewis's girlfriend kindly spoke with the student developing a bomb for the Nazis (not as kindly as Lewis did earlier, but the lady's remark that she could whip up a bomb herself was amusing). The woman tried to convince the young man to report all important information about the Germans' developments and desires to her or Lewis. Whether he agreed to this or not is unclear.

The second episode involves Magda in the guise of a German woman suffering from her husband's beatings and seeking support from Dr. Kraft. This time, she moves from words to deeds (no, it's not about sex, although that happens again too), killing a random unfortunate man whom she presents as that same abusive husband. Dr. Kraft rushes to the lady in distress like a prince on a white horse, abandoning his wife and children under the flimsy pretext of an emergency at work. He finds the girl covered in blood next to a dead man and... helps her bury the corpse. You have to earn that sex somehow!

Penny Dreadful Season 1 Episode 5

Magda, in the guise of councilman Townsend's advisor, told him not to spread the word about their mutual acquaintances, including the guy the politician slept with in the previous episode. And Townsend also danced in this episode, so at least there was some action!
