💡 Every time you write code or hear the word "algorithm" - you are pronouncing the name of a person from Central Asia

Today I stumbled upon a thought about algorithms, and it happened - I went to find out where this word actually comes from.

The word "algorithm" traces back to the name of a 9th-century Persian mathematician - Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. Here's how it happened:
• In 825, al-Khwarizmi wrote a treatise on arithmetic operations in the decimal number system. "Al-Khwarizmi" literally means "from Khwarezm" - a historical region in Central Asia.
• In the 12th century, the book was translated into Latin. The treatise began with the words: "Dixit Algorismi" - "Al-Khwarizmi said".
• European readers mistakenly took Algorismi not as the author's name, but as the name of the set of rules itself. Thus the scientist's name turned into the term algorismus.
• The word entered the Russian language via German or directly from Latin - and became established as "algorithm".


And a bonus: from the title of another book by the same scientist - "Kitab al-jabr wa-l-muqabala" - the word algebra originated.
