While preparing for a new video, I decided to watch "Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles" AND IT'S SUCH A DELIGHT
The impassive static camera, the pervasive loneliness, the isolation—I feel like I'm just a neighbor to the woman on the other side of the screen. By the end of the film, of course, the oblivion dissipates, but the feeling of total delight doesn't leave. This is a first impression; the film needs to settle in the mind, but the cream has been skimmed and savored.
The Belgian 3.5-hour film about a housewife-prostitute, directed in 1975 by Chantal Akerman, made my morning. Peak cinema.
